Lewis was born in Rutland, Vermont, to a Jewish mother and a Catholic father of Italian, English and Welsh descent. At the time of his birth, his parents were living in a log cabin. In addition to “Outside,” Break the Cycle featured the hit single “It’s Been Awhile.” A bleak, midtempo ballad in the vein of “Outside,” “It’s Been Awhile” musically emphasizes Lewis’s tortured vocals and acoustic guitar.
