It is typically made using a French baguette, or sometimes ciabatta which is partially sliced downwards, allowing the condiments to soak into the loaf while keeping it in one piece. The bread is then stuffed through the cuts with oil and minced garlic before baking. Alternatively, butter and garlic powder are used, or the bread is cut lengthwise into separate slices which are individually garnished.

Kay’s routine gained some revived attention following a stand-up act by an aspiring comedienne named Elaine Williams on series 5 of Britain’s Got Talent, whose heavily criticised and ridiculed performance eventually devolved into simply repeating the phrase “garlic bread”, in reference to the Peter Kay routine, multiple times. When this was not met with laughter, she told the audience to “fuck off”, before walking off stage. A clip of the audition has since gone viral on YouTube, and is associated with numerous internet memes on the subject of garlic bread.Garlic bread stems from bruschetta, which appeared in Italy around the 15th century, and can be traced back to Ancient Rome. Garlic bread originated in the United States and it is a typical Italian-American dish. It probably originated after Italian immigrants started to use butter as a substitute for olive oil, which was uncommon in the United States in the first half of the 20th century.

Garlic bread (also called garlic toast) consists of bread (usually a baguette, sour dough, or bread such as ciabatta), topped with garlic and occasionally olive oil or butter and may include additional herbs, such as oregano or chives. It is then either grilled until toasted or baked in a conventional or bread oven. Some variants are topped with a variety of cheeses, often mozzarella, Parmesan, cheddar or feta. Some restaurants use clarified butter in place of olive oil.
In the 2005 comic book Scott Pilgrim vs. the World created by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley, and the 2010 film adaptation of the same name, Scott mentions this as his favorite food: “Garlic bread is my favourite food. I could honestly eat it for every meal. Or just all the time without even stopping”.
In the United States garlic bread has been on the menu of many restaurants since at least the 1950s, often paired with pasta dishes, particularly lasagna and spaghetti. Commercially manufactured frozen garlic bread was developed in the 1970s by Cole’s Quality Foods in Muskegon, Michigan. In France, it was common in Provence, where it was called chapon and served with salad. It was also prepared in other regions, such as Quercy, as a crust of bread rubbed with garlic, and spiced with a pinch of salt along with a drop of walnut oil.
British comedian Peter Kay famously mentioned the bread in his stand-up routine, quoting his father’s disbelief upon hearing of it (“Garlic bread? Garlic bread?”). He subsequently referenced this in his sitcom Phoenix Nights, when nightclub owner Brian Potter (played by Kay) says, “Garlic bread – it’s the future, I’ve tasted it”.
My initial reaction was very positive to a low carb, affordable, keto-friendly bread. Purchased a double pack and enjoyed toast for first time in many months. The love affair faded quickly however upon researching the “high oleic sunflower oil” which I consider poisonous due to the incredibly high Omega 6 content. The high Oleic properties gives the bread a longer shelf life (preservative). If the bread didn’t contain THIS seed oil then I would heartily endorse and continue to enjoy consuming it, regretfully, won’t be spending hard earned cash to shorten my life span.
How long do you cook frozen garlic bread?
To cook the frozen slices of garlic bread, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Once the oven is heated, take as many slices out of the freezer as you’d like, and place them on a baking sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
This is plant-based, NON-GMO and certified keto! This is not gluten-free, it has wheat flour. I find most keto products are gluten-free but not this bread. Two net carbs per slice. Four net carbs per sandwich. I’m type 2 diabetes and I can eat a carbonaut pb sandwich plus a small apple and my blood glucose numbers barely move. It makes great pizza toast too!
Has anyone else got violently ill within 2- 3 hours of eating this bread? I thought I’d try out the one loaf I put in the freezer and no 3 hours later violently vomiting for 3 hours. This is the 4th and last time I try it!
First of all the bread is very soft and spongey, even toasted. Basically I could roll this up and make a little ball with it so the texture is definitely different than regular bread. Also both my husband and I noticed it had a bitter aftertaste that lingers in your mouth. I’m not sure where that’s coming from but it was noticeable.
Love Love Love this bread!.. I just wish Costco here would get the gluten free and cinnamon varieties. I love the aroma when toasting it. My son are big fans now and have been enjoying all our favorite oldies that we were missing. I keep one loaf in the fridge, and the rest in the freezer till needed. Thank you Carbonaut!
This review is for all my keto, low-carb people! Full disclosure: I’m a carb loving girl so I definitely can’t say I’m on a keto diet or even a low-carb diet. I do however respect those who are on the keto diet or that are trying to lower their carb intake so today I’m reviewing the Costco Carbonaut Low Carb Multigrain and White Keto Bread.
How much garlic bread per person?
Yield: This Garlic Bread recipe makes 12 slices. I generally make enough for two to three per person, so feel free to double or triple this recipe as needed.
Multigrain Carbonaut Bread – One slice is 80 calories, zero grams of sugar, three and a half grams of fat, six grams of fibre, 140 mg of sodium, six grams of protein, and eight grams of carbohydrates. That’s a lot of protein for one small slice of bread! This can be found with all the other bread at Costco and the item number for the multigrain bread is 1494429. The item number for the white bread is 1565961.I paid $8.99 Canadian for both the bag of Costco Multigrain and White Carbonaut Low Carb, Keto Bread. You get two loaves in the bag, each loaf is 544 grams.
I’m in Ontario Canada our Costco carries it but just seeded and white. Please Costco!!! Continue to carry this bread for the diabetics of Canada. Thank you! PS I don’t notice Any aftertaste.
To try the white bread I toasted it and put a little butter on top. The first thing that I noticed is that the bread is quite light when you compare it to normal bread. It toasts nicely though and can almost pass for normal bread/toast.Alright so here’s my honest opinion about this product. It’s not that bad! Honestly it’s not as awful tasting as I expected it to be. It actually does resemble bread and tastes slightly similar. There are a few things I’ll point out though.I’m a diabetic and these breads allow me to have toast for breakfast and sandwiches at lunch without elevating my blood sugars. They are an absolute god send for me. They are the most ‘bread like’ of the keto breads that I have tried. (Some keto breads seem to just be seeds and nuts with a little binder to hold them together.) They are also the most reasonably priced. the price is now $9.99 for a bag of 2 loaves. There’s the same slight bitterness in the white bread that there is in the multigrain bread that I notice after chewing for a few seconds. The bitterness is less noticeable than it is for most keto bread products.I didn’t get violently ill but I was certainly nauseous. I did not find that it tasted like regular flour breads as others have claimed. I found it mealy with a chalky texture once you are chewing it. I’ve tried toasting it and having it plain. Not a fan at all. Will not purchase again. Far better flavourful with bread-like texture brands out there!I popped my bread into the freezer as soon as I brought it home and it freezes well. The best before date on the bread is about a week from the date I purchased the bread.
Does Costco have low calorie bread?
White Carbonaut Bread – One slice is 80 calories, zero grams of sugar, three and a half grams of fat, seven grams of fibre, 140 mg of sodium, seven grams of protein, and nine grams of carbohydrates.
White Carbonaut Bread – One slice is 80 calories, zero grams of sugar, three and a half grams of fat, seven grams of fibre, 140 mg of sodium, seven grams of protein, and nine grams of carbohydrates.Like Terrance Bolger (see cmment above), I’m also a type 2 diabetic and have switched to Carbonaut multigrain bread. Much better tasting than the thin and airy Silver Hills cardboard bread and many fewer net cards and the equal in taste to Stonemill Sourdough Rye which I’d been using before the appearance of Carbonaut. The seeds on the outside are great because it makes it seem more like normal bread and also adds some extra crunchy texture. I wouldn’t choose that over regular bread but if I were on a keto diet this would probably taste amazing. Especially turned into a grilled cheese or slathered with butter. The Costco in Midlothian, Virginia had this for a short tome, but discontinued it. It is awesome. When I realized it was being discontinued (asterisk on the sign), I bought the last 4 loaves they had and froze them. Nearly out and need a new source (I really wish Costco would reconsider). This bread is probably amazing for those who are on a strict keto diet. I didn’t love the taste (the texture and bitter aftertaste are my main complaints) but that’s most likely because I eat regular bread all the time! I’d say if you’re really watching your carbs or are on keto, give this a try. Please note that this review was not paid for or sponsored by any third party. Texas Toast, a popular garlic toast brand, can retail for about $3 to $4 for 16 ounces, or if you purchase at a wholesale club like Sam’s Club, the cost can be about $8 to $10 for a 32 count box.Depending on the brand, the average slice will have 206 calories, 10 grams of fat, 320mg of sodium 25 grams of carbohydrates and about 5 grams of protein.
For example, the Great Value garlic bread, made by Walmart, retails for about $2 for 16 ounces. This package has 16 slices in a bag and the recommended serving size is eight. Another grocery store chain — Publix — sells its own garlic bread for about $2. Michelle over at iheartpublix.com tested the Publix garlic bread and noted while it looked better, it will pretty similar in taste when compared to the Cole’s brand. Popular garlic toast brands found in the store includes New York Brand, Cole’s, Pepperidge Farm and Texas Toast. Most retailers, such as Kroger, Walmart and Publix, also have their own version. Most frozen garlic bread will bake in eight to 10 minutes, and the average bag will contain about 16 smaller slices which are precut. Some may come in two long loaves that will be cut once baked.
Garlic bread is fairly easy to make. For less than the price of frozen pack garlic bread, you can gather all of the ingredients necessary to make some at home. For example, consider following a simple recipe such as spreading butter on some bread and throwing a pinch of cheese and garlic powder on top. Bake it for 10 minutes at 350 and viola — you have homemade garlic bread.
On average, garlic bread is going to cost $2 to $6 for a pack of 6 to 12 pieces, either fresh or frozen. The price will depend on the brand and where it’s purchased at.The Costco bakery carries its own Kirkland Signature Garlic Baguette that makes a quick and convenient fresh garlic toast at home. How does this garlic bread compare to others from Costco?
We hadn’t tried the Costco Kirkland Signature Garlic Baguette from Costco so I picked it up to try and review. Other bakery items I love from Costco are the Villagio Garlic Toast, Panaji Naan Minis, Kirkland Signature Ciabatta Buns, Kirkland Signature Cheese Buns, Kirkland Signature Brioche Buns, Kirkland Signature Cherry Danish, Kirkland Signature Palm Leaves and the Kirkland Signature Homestyle Apple Pie.
Not my favorite garlic toast from Costco. I prefer the Villaggio Garlic Toast from Costco but this was alright! I think I’d like it more if I were hosting a huge pasta get-together and needed a mass amount of garlic bread.Garlic bread is a “treat” in our house, my husband eats about ten pieces of it when we have it and I like it too. It drives me a bit crazy because he’ll eat it before he eats whatever we’re having it with! For example, I’ll make homemade lasagna, serve it and then watch Sean eat a mass amount of garlic toast while the lasagna I slaved over goes cold, haha.One-eighth of a loaf is 200 calories, nine grams of fat, 300 milligrams of sodium, 26 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, zero grams of sugar and five grams of protein. That’s actually not as many calories and fat as I expect for 1/8th of a loaf! The cost is $6.99 Canadian for one bag of two large garlic baguettes. I wish they sold packs of one because two baguettes is a lot! One can be frozen but it won’t taste as fresh.
Do they have garlic bread in America?

I really appreciate that butter is used instead of margarine. The garlic baguette contains wheat, barley, milk and sulfites and may contain soy, sesame, egg, peanut and tree nuts.I like this garlic toast but it’s not my favorite. It’s not as garlic-y as some bread I’ve had but I don’t mind that. There’s a ton of butter flavor and a hint of lemon which is unique. I prefer my garlic bread really soft in the middle and this is chewy with very crisp outer edges.
Because there are two big baguettes in the package this is perfect to pick up for a big family dinner or potluck. This is convenient to bake, you remove it from the bag and place it on a parchment-lined baking tray and heat it at 375 for about 20 to 25 minutes.
The best-before date on the Costco garlic baguette is two days from the day it was packaged but, I would eat it the day it’s packaged if possible. We enjoyed ours on the same day it was packaged and because of that it tasted fresher.
In a bowl, combine 8 Tbsp room temperature salted butter, 2 Tbsp olive oil, 4 cloves garlic (minced) 1 Tbsp dried parsley, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, and 1/4 tsp salt.
I’ve made my own garlic bread in the past and it’s to die for, but when do I ever need a whole loaf at once? While I probably could eat a whole loaf, I know deep down that it’s probably not a good idea (look at me being a responsible adult!). This Homemade Freezer Garlic Bread fixes that problem. Prepare the slices of garlic bread ahead, freeze them (unbaked), and then they’re ready and waiting for you whenever you get the craving, just like the kind you buy in a box at the store.
thank you for the recipe. I cannot eat garlic so wanted to make my own without the garlic since could not find it anywhere in grocery stores without garlic. To bake the frozen garlic bread, preheat the oven to 400ºF. Place your frozen slices on a baking sheet and once the oven is fully preheated, transfer the slices to the hot oven. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges of the garlic bread are golden brown. If you prefer a softer garlic bread rather than one with crispy edges, you can wrap the slices in foil before baking.

Place your bread slices on a baking sheet. Divide the garlic spread between your slices (about 1/2 to 1 Tbsp per slice) and spread it from edge to edge of the bread. Freeze the bread flat on the baking sheet for about 30 minutes, or until the garlic spread is firm (if you forget at 30 minutes and come back to it hours later, that’s okay. Just don’t leave it for more than a day or it could start to dry out or absorb rogue flavors.EVERYTHING. J/k, almost. It’s super fast to prepare and then you have a whole stockpile of single serving slices that are ready to pop into the oven on a moments notice. Bake two slices or ten, it’s up to you! Plus, since you’re mixing up the garlic butter topping, you know exactly what’s in there (and what isn’t), which always makes me feel good.
I usually try to use my garlic bread within three months of freezing. But if we’re being honest, it never lasts that long because it’s too good! Frozen foods undergo a slow decline in quality and flavor while frozen, so you don’t want to keep them too long, even if technically they are still safe to eat.
Cooking on a budget shouldn’t mean canned beans and ramen noodles night after night. Welcome to the world of delicious recipes designed for small budgets. You would need to butter one side, freeze it on a sheet pan with the butter side facing up, then turn it over to butter, and freeze again. Then divide the toasts with parchment in whatever freezer-safe container you are going to use. Obviously do not place buttered toasts in a toaster, and use a sheet pan in a warm oven instead. xoxo -Monti

The saddest thing about eating this cheese bread is that it wasn’t even a fun experience. In the worst-case scenario, I figured it would be fun to pull the bread apart. While the product is imported from France, the cheese capital of the world, they decided to give us Americans some cheese sauce instead of the actual good stuff.
They even have their 43% cheese sauce graphic on top of a wax seal. I guess they think that’s what we Americans like. Am I insulted? Not yet, but that is strike 1.For taste, the bread was a letdown. It was crispy and toasty on the outside, but the inside was dry and had a texture that reminded me of an old crusty carpet.
The star of the show, the 43% cheese sauce, was bland and flavorless. The sauce was thin and had just a hint of garlic and cheese flavor. There were plenty of herbs in the cheese, but no taste. Strike 2.
They even advertise on the packaging that this cheese bread contains 43% cheese sauce. I was under the impression that we wanted as little cheese sauce as possible, but France seems to think otherwise. This package of Tipiak Pull Apart Cheese from Costco contains 2 individually wrapped cheese breads. At $11.89 for the two-pack, each cheese bread costs $5.95.
