He passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Leesville.Left to cherish his memory is his sons; Jeffery Dowden of Rosepine, La, John Dowden (Angela) of Leesville, La, daughters; Lori Denice Johnson (Robert) of Leesville, La, Donna Dowden of Leesville, La, Melinda James of Leesville, La, Kerri Moore (Johnathan) of Leesville, La, brother; Jimmy Lamar Dowden of Leesville, La, sister; Mildred Bingaman of Leesville, La, ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

She helped her beloved husband farm and together they mowed the Riverside Cemetery in St. Joe, IN for 20 years. They pulled ponies and then went into raising and showing registered Belgium draft horses. She loved attending the kid’s sporting events. Rebecca & Marvin traveled to 49 states (all but Alaska). She loved gardening and growing strawberries & tomatoes. After retiring, she loved playing Farm Town on the computer with her friends.She was preceded in death by a daughter & son-in-law, DeeAnn & John Crecelius; daughter-in-law, Katherine Dowden; brothers, Dallas L. The things that were most important to Ed were: faith, family, friends, and farming. He also had a passion for reading WWII books and looked forward to visiting friends and spending time at “Jackie’s.”After graduating from Medford High School, Ed enlisted with the National Guard from 1952 to 1957. In 1957, he joined the Army’s 82nd Airborne where he remained until 1959. During this time, he parachuted out of military airplanes 17 times.
Edward Dowden, age 89, of Owen, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family under the tender care of Compassus Hospice on Saturday, June 3, 2023.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Stanislaus Michael Antony officiating. Interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Owen American Legion Post #123, Owen-Withee Vets Club and the Thorp VFW Post #9057. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 at the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Owen with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
After leaving the Army in 1959, he purchased his first farm in Lublin, WI where he and Pat remained for 10 years. They purchased their farm in Owen, WI in 1972, where he remained until the time of his death.He was born in Milwaukee, WI on January 14th, 1934, to Plennie and Anne Dowden and was one of 14 children. He married the love of his life Patricia Timmers 63 years ago on October 17th, 1959. They had 6 children: Geoff (Missy) Dowden, Florence (Glen) LaBeau, Dan (Sheri) Dowden, Bonnie (Dave) Eloranta, Tim (Dana) Dowden and Amy (Brittany) Dowden. He had 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. On May 9, 2023, James Paul Dowden passed away at the age of 57. There was a sense of caring from each staff member. I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone. I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision.

The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief. After the passing of my mother, the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign, which took a huge burden off my mind at the time.In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father. Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death.
