Each box contains 20 cigars, each with an all-Nicaraguan blend wrapped in a Sumatra seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. Upon examination, the Allegiance Confidant gives off a delightful floral aroma that sets the stage for a unique flavour profile. Notes of earth, cinnamon, dark coffee, and nuttiness are present in each puff, making for an unforgettable smoking experience. Way back in the day, I was and still am a huge fan of the E.P. Carrillo La Historia, it ranked number 4 in my 2014 list of top cigars. Now that I have sampled and thoroughly enjoyed the Allegiance, I have to say it is by far my favorite in the company’s portfolio. It was very well constructed and carried a fantastically long ash. The profile was well balanced and had some really special notes that peaked my interest like honey, cashew, and savory spice. This is a cigar that I can say is box worthy and I feel it is one that can be enjoyed any time of the day. I rate this a respectable 96. The latest offering from E.P. Carrillo is named the Allegiance and it is available on retail shops across the country. I picked one up for this review at my local brick & mortar – Executive Cigar Shop & Lounge in Melbourne, FL. The Allegiance now joins the award winning trio in the Perez-Carrillo Series: Pledge, Encore, & La Historia.
Allegiance was blended by Ernesto using Oliva’s world famous tobaccos and marks the second cigar of the E.P. Carrillo line to be produced outside of Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic.” “From the very beginning of E.P. Carrillo, we understood the importance of working with like-minded tobacco producers from across the globe. That’s why we have partnered with Oliva Cigars, a well trusted legacy cigar company located in Nicaragua, known for great blends and consistent performance. The Allegiance is adorned with 3 bands. The primary band uses a lime green and gold motif with the name Perez Carrillo printed in the center. There is also some artful images and embellishments applied tot he band making it quite elegant. The secondary band is placed just below the primary and uses a forest green and gold motif with the name Allegiance printed in white across it. Finally a dark green band covers the foot. I really like the colors of the branding on the Allegiance and feel it would really pop on the shelf. It certainly caught my eye when I visited my local shop.
The E.P. Carrillo Allegiance is wrapped with a beautiful reddish brown leaf that has a slight oily sheen to it. There are a few noticeable veins especially on the top of the barrel. The box pressing is more rounded than crisp and there is a slight give when pressed between the fingers. A simple cap finishes the presentation.
I opened the cap perfectly with my CigarMedics Baller cutter and proceeded to give it some cold draw puffs that I found to be a tad open in restriction and offered notes of earth, sweetness, and pepper.Fun fact: E.P. Carrillo announced in a press release that as part of the Allegiance launch, the inside lids of 50 boxes have been autographed by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. If you are one of the lucky ones to find an autographed box, you will win an ashtray from E.P. Carrillo.Using my single flame torch, I warmed the foot to an even orange glow and I drew in a mouth filling puff of floral and earth notes to start the journey. Follow along as I burn this one to ash.Winner of multiple Cigar of the year awards from the experts at Cigar Aficionado, almost always making it onto their top 25 cigars list, every new blend from his brand is an event that cannot be missed. From the very beginning of E.P. Carrillo, his company understood the importance of working tobacco producers from across the globe. For the release of the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance they decided to work with Oliva Cigars from Nicaragua. Allegiance was blended by Ernesto using Oliva’s world famous tobaccos and is produced outside of Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic where is sees it’s production occur in Nicaragua.Allegiance is descrived as a medium to full bodied cigar that is both complex and flavorful offering the smoker notes of spice, nut, sweetness and a slight hint of black coffee.
Note: The following shows the various Perez-Carrillo Allegiance vitolas. Some of these cigars may have been released after this post was originally published. The list was last updated on March 31, 2023.
From the time it was founded in 2009, every E.P. Carrillo-branded release has been produced at Tabacalera La Alianza S.A., the company’s factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic. That changed with the announcement of the Perez-Carrillo Allegiance last summer, a four-vitola line that is instead being produced by Oliva Cigar Co. in Estelí, Nicaragua.
There is every little change in the profile of the Allegiance Wingman in the final third, as the cocoa nibs flavor that took over in the second third continues to lead the way until the end of the cigar. Additional notes of cinnamon, cedar, espresso beans, sourdough bread, citrus peel and earth make themselves known until I put the nubs down with about an inch remaining, but none of them come close to being strong enough to take over the top spot at any point. In addition, the retrohale remains similar to the previous two thirds, including the significant amount of black pepper with a touch of indeterminate sweetness underneath. Flavor and body stay put at just over the medium and a solid medium, respectively, but there is a change in the strength, which has increased to medium-full. Construction-wise, all three cigars seem to finally be on the same track, with no issues when it comes to the burn, smoke production or draws until the end of the cigars.
The green colors that dominate the bands on the Perez-Carrillo Allegiance Wingman are hard to miss but I am not sure that it combines all that well with the red-tinged milk chocolate-colored wrapper from a visual standpoint. There is mottling on all three cigars as well as some slight tooth to the wrapper, but very few overt veins or signs of oil between them. Aromas from the wrapper include sweet cedar followed by generic nuts, earth, leather tack, straw, baker’s spices and a touch of nutmeg. The foot expands on the nutty note by leaps and bounds, resulting in a creamy cashew note easily outpacing black pepper, leather, dark chocolate, cedar and a slight honey sweetness. Finally, after a v-cut, the cold draw brings flavors of even more creamy cashews, slightly sweet cedar, leather tack, earth, espresso beans, Chex Mix and light maple sweetness.
