Atlas—like the Interstate series of Airstreams—is built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 chassis and is powered by a M-B 188-horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine. It’s considered a Class B RV and has seating for four and sleeping for two. Features include lockable underbody storage, power entry/exit stairs, and power awning. It’s the Airstream lineup’s most expensive touring coach, which translates to a starting price of $289,911.Airstreams aren’t exactly budget-friendly, but how much is the cheapest new Airstream, and what about the most expensive? You’ll find that here, plus the special editions and most popular models. The prices we’ve included were approximate when this article was published.

The Airstream REI Co-op Special Edition turns the front of the travel trailer into a galley, with a two-burner cooktop and Epicurean sink cover made from recycled paper. A full wet bath is also in the mix, and the two bench seats and tabletops turn into sleeping space. Ample storage is a big part of this travel trailer, which starts at $52,900. If you know REI, then you’ll recognize the nod to it in the form of New Spruce, the color associated with the outdoor brand.
The Rangeline is one of Airstream’s more unique touring coaches for two reasons: It’s the least expensive, with a starting cost of $147,570, and it’s the only one built on a Class B Ram ProMaster 3500 chassis. Under the hood is a 276-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. That engine powers the 21-foot Rangeline, which seats four and sleeps two.The bathroom in the Airstream Atlas is kind of a big deal: It takes up the rear of the vehicle and has stainless-steel fixtures, teak inlays in the roomy shower, tankless water heater, and storage/drawers. The kitchen rivals it, with a deep sink, two-burner cooktop, and more. The reclining couch is also the slide-out Murphy bed and faces the 40-inch Samsung TV with built-in soundbar. All Airstreams do share a couple things with the most expensive model, including air conditioner and heat pump for cooling and warming, as well as being pre-wired for up to three roof-mounted solar panels as a source of electricity (optional solar panel packages are also available). According to Airstream, the solar panels generate electricity for an average of four hours per day.

The Airstream name goes back to 1929, when founder Wally Byam first put a makeshift tent on top of a Model T chassis, which he later evolved to a more solid shelter against weather, complete with a stove. Today, the Airstream name represents nine travel trailers and six touring coaches for use in overlanding, camping, glamping, lifestyling, road-tripping, and, yes, living. The travel trailers range in size from 16 to 33 feet in length and sleep from 2 to 8, depending on the model. Touring coaches run 16 to 30 feet and can sleep up to 9, based on the amount of stretch. There’s even a bathroom. The Airstream Flying Could 27FB offers a large living area thanks to the bed being at the front of the trailer. With a starting price of $115,500, it includes Ultraleather furniture, QuietStream climate control, three-burner gas stove, lots of storage and counter space, retractable awning, and much more for comfort on—or off—the road. What’s an Airstream “Silver Bullet” model? The nickname for shiny travel trailers with the curved aluminum shell. Based on the company’s internal data for the 2022 model year, the most popular Airstream “Silver Bullet” was the Flying Cloud 27FB, a two-axle trailer that starts at $115,500. Airstream calls the Flying Cloud “family-friendly” and the 27FB version is 27 feet long and sleeps six. There are more floor plans to choose from than with any other model, including the Flying Cloud 30FB Office (it has a corner office) at the high end, with a starting price of $125,500.The Airstream Rangeline includes a foldable bed with a European suspension system, swiveling captain’s chairs, an electric stovetop that can be stowed away, and an electric refrigerator. A table can be removed as well as adjusted, depending on the number of guests. It has what’s considered a “wet bath,” so the shower, flush toilet, and sink are in the same compartment.Another of the lower-cost Airstreams also happens to be a collaboration model: the REI Co-op Special Edition travel trailer, which starts at $52,900. REI factors in as a product kit focused on its own brand partners, which show up in the chairs, kitchen utensils, rechargeable lantern, table, and more. The products have dedicated storage space. The REI model is based off the single-axle Basecamp 16 travel trailer and is 16 feet with the ability to sleep two. It also has the X-Package, which includes a 3-inch lift kit and rock guards.

It feels weird to refer to the Basecamp as the “cheapest” Airstream, because $46,000 is still a lot of money for anything, including a trailer. But the reality is, the single-axle Basecamp 16 is the lowest-priced Airstream you can get. And you still get a bathroom and kitchen for the cost. The 16 sleeps two and is 16 feet; the Basecamp 20 is 20 feet and sleeps four, with a starting price of $54,400. Airstream said that its 2022 model year data showed the Basecamp 20 to be its most popular model.
When your Airstream is a collaboration with Pottery Barn and has a starting price of $165,700, you can expect special home-like details, like a solid walnut cutting board/sink cover, accessory kit that includes stoneware dinnerware and doormat, stainless-steel flat apron sink, wall sconces, special bedding, window covering, and custom storage. There’s also a custom-made sofa and unique power awning. The most expensive Airstream travel trailer is the Classic, which starts at $188,100. It’s designed as a living space (or for long road trips) and has two floor plans, of 30 or 33 feet (the 33-footer starts at $206,500). Both two-axle trailers sleep up to five.

You’ve seen special-edition models from Jeep, Ford, and other automakers, and Airstream is no different. It describes the Pottery Barn Special Edition travel trailer as having “custom furniture based on best-selling Pottery Barn designs, tailor-made storage solutions, and a timeless design aesthetic.” Owning a piece of this partnership that’s also known as model 28RB starts at $165,700. The two-axle trailer is 28 feet long and sleeps five. The Airstream Basecamp 16 (and the larger Basecamp 20) maybe be at the lower end of the price spectrum of Airstream ownership, but you still get a lot of high-level standard equipment, like seating that includes two benches that flip into a bed, storage, two-burner stove, microwave, refrigerator, and wet bath. Being lightweight and agile makes it a good little traveler, too. You might hear “Airstream” and think only of A-list celebrities and big dollar-signs. Those aren’t inaccurate thoughts, but at their core, Airstream travel trailers and touring coaches are about getting outdoors and being comfortable while there; exploring with the creature comforts of home, sometimes in your home. Among the Airstream Classic’s features is a large bathroom with heated shower floor and towel bar, double-door wardrobe, spacious shower, projection entertainment system, and Ultraleather interior. The kitchen features big names like Corian for the countertops, a high-end three-burner stainless-steel gas stove, and a convection microwave. Many of the trailer’s systems, including lighting and awning, are controlled via touchscreen.

And the stereo was bumping!

Colorado turkey hunting is a peculiar activity. First, there are the birds, a subspecies called the Merriam turkey, which doesn’t really behave like any turkey known to most American hunters. Next, there are the mountains, which, are vastly different than most turkey habitats across the continent.
Prior to GearJunkie, he was the chief photographer for the Virgin Islands Daily News and former Editor In Chief for GearJunkie. Based in Denver, Colorado, McCoy is an avid trail runner, camper, hunter, angler, mountain biker, skier, and beer tester. It’s a hurried scene that becomes vastly more civilized inside a camper. There, you can fire up a heater, turn on lights, stand up in your underwear without freezing, and, well, you get the picture. It’s much faster and more comfortable, and the same is true when you return to camp after sunset. Given the 600-pound tongue weight of the trailer, some outdoor gear, and 350 pounds of dudes, we didn’t have much wiggle room left. Concerning tow capacity, the 6,000-pound trailer was about 1,500 pounds below the maximum tow rating of my truck. However, the Airstream had its faults. First, the windows in the Flying Cloud were remarkably hard to open. At one point, they were so hard to open we just gave up and ran the extremely effective electric vents. Those kept the camper nice and cool inside, even on a 75-degree day with it parked in the bright, hot sun.Who is that? I see it as ideal for two people who want to spend a lot of time on the road. Whether that’s a couple of romantic partners or close friends, two people could spend months in a trailer like the Flying Cloud and be entirely comfortable.

Turkey hunting in Colorado means unpredictable weather and off-grid camping. So it seemed like a great opportunity to put one of Airstream’s most popular travel trailers, the Flying Cloud 23FB, to the test.
That led to us draining the battery a little faster than we expected. While the system did suffice to get us through 3 days of boondocking, we were surprised when the battery died on the morning of the third day. In the future, I’d be more cautious about battery management and expect we could stretch it several more days with a little less liberal use of lights, stereo, heating, and fans. And ultimately, for those who want to spend many months on the road and have a product that will last for decades to come, this Airstream is probably worth the hefty $87,000 price tag. For that, you get a home that runs self-sufficiently off the grid and can be towed behind an F-150 (although a larger truck would be better).

Loaded up with one buddy and part of our gear for the weekend (another friend drove down separately), my truck was pegged at just below its maximum payload of 1,404 pounds. That was in part because I have both a topper and a DECKED drawer system in my truck bed, adding about 350 pounds to the truck.
I started hunting more than 25 years ago. In that time, I’ve spent hundreds of nights in backcountry camps or a tent next to my vehicle. But it wasn’t until last year that I spent a night in a camper while hunting, and it was an eye-opening experience. So you stagger outside and put on your frozen boots. You quickly light a camp stove to get the coffee going, and then organize your kit for the day in the light of your headlamp. Within about 15-30 minutes, you pull it all together, finish up your coffee, and begin hiking toward a trailhead or logging road to get to your hunting spot.

Why are Airstreams so expensive?
The Body Beautiful. The principle reason Airstreams are expensive is the Aluminium body they are so famous for. The shell of an airstream is made from a high quality “aircraft grade” aluminum alloy riveted over a steel frame. This is insulated and then an inner shell of aluminum is riveted on from the inside.
Of course, that’s probably not what most Flying Cloud consumers want. But for a few folks used to camping in tents, both a bathroom and indoor shower felt like wasted space for a long weekend of camping. None of us used the bathroom, as there was a pit toilet at the campground, and showering just wasn’t needed — yet.

How much is Tom Hanks Airstream?
UPDATE 8/13/21: The Bonhams auction house sold the Hanks Airstream trailer for $235,200 today.
It was educational to spend a few days in the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB. While I don’t think I’m the ideal customer for this model (I’d probably be better served with one of these off-road-style trailers), it’s a very nice camper for the right people. In short: The 2021 Flying Cloud 23FB performed admirably for 3 days of boondocking. It kept us warm at night, cool under the hot noontime sun, and provided a cozy cocoon for nighttime socializing and pre-dawn hunt prep. But the turkeys seemed unimpressed. My final criticism is more of a personal preference, but it’s worth considering if you’re in the market. While the Flying Cloud 23FB is a pretty large trailer when it comes to towing, the interior space isn’t enormous. Compared with my buddy’s cheap pop-up, the Flying Cloud was somewhat cramped with three adult men while hanging out at the end of the day for dinner and beers. We had a little trouble fitting around the table, but we made it work by sliding the table around to increase space as much as possible. While cooking, two of us would remain seated while one cooked, leaving plenty of space in the galley. Ultimately, it was entirely fine. We could have squeezed in a fourth person with a bit of effort.

Similarly, it would be very good for a family of three, with plenty of space for two people in the comfy queen-size bed in the main sleeping quarters. The kitchen table converted to a bed, which we found comfortable for an adult, would be just fine for a child.

Having weathered some really nasty early spring storms in turkey hunts past, for 2021 I decided to take Airstream up on its offer to check out one of its trailers. A flurry of emails and a few months later, I found myself towing a 2021 Flying Cloud behind my F-150 toward our hunting destination.
For those who don’t hunt, let me paint a picture of hunting from a tent. Your alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m. It’s pitch black, and you turn on a headlamp. As much as you don’t want to get out of the cozy sleeping bag, the clock is ticking before shooting light, usually half an hour before sunrise. You need to get moving.Long story short, my 2010 F-150 with a 5.4L Triton V8 did just fine towing the 23-foot Flying Cloud. It was able to accelerate (slowly) even up steep hills, and it rolled along comfortably at 65 mph on the highway.

I’ll start this review at an important beginning — towing the trailer. Towing is crucial, as the marriage between your tow vehicle and your trailer is hugely important to both your happiness and safety. Finally, and maybe most importantly, there’s the weather. Turkey opener in Colorado can mean warm, balmy days or snowstorms. Flip a coin, and those are your odds of either.

Airstream has a reputation for high-quality camper trailers. And after using the Flying Cloud for a long weekend, I have to say the reputation is valid. Compared to cheaper RVs I’ve spent time in, the Airstream just feels solid.Because in hunting, most of your choring hours happen to be in the dark. After years of doing all this outside in the wind, rain, cold, and dark, having a warm, enclosed place to do those chores feels downright luxurious. And in the case of this turkey hunt in Colorado, the Airstream took this luxury to another level for our crew of three hunters.

But was my truck ideal? Definitely not. If I owned that trailer and planned long tows, I would opt for a larger tow vehicle with more capacity. However, the older F-150 did a fine job in our 3-hour tow.In testing the Flying Cloud 23FB, I stretched my 2010 Ford F-150 FX4 to its limits in terms of tow capacity and payload. (Note: The weight the trailer exerts on your camper — its tongue weight — plus the weight of your occupants and gear should not exceed your maximum payload.)

The only tool you need is a Phillips screwdriver. The first step is to remove any obstacles (like cushions) from the curtain area. Then unsnap the four buttons that hold the curtains to the wall of your Flying Cloud.
When all the curtain glides have been slid into the curtain rails, gently press the plastic end cap back onto the curtain rail and re-secure the end cap with the screw. Finish by snapping the buttons in place.

Add color, style, and personality to the interior décor of your 23FB, 25FB or 27FB Airstream Flying Cloud with our Custom Replacement Curtains. Hand-made by experienced associates from Airstream’s in-house sewing department, our curtain packages are easy to install in a few simple steps. Choose from six different fabric patterns and a variety of coverage packages custom-made to perfectly fit the windows of your Flying Cloud.
Even movie stars need to declutter sometimes. Tom Hanks, for example, has decided he no longer needs his 1992 Airstream travel trailer, which has been a part of his movie-making experience since he bought it in 1993. Hanks used the trailer on 18 movie sets over the decades, including Sleepless in Seattle and Forrest Gump in the ’90s all the way to movies like The Circle in 2017.Hanks bought and personalized the Model 34 Limited Excella trailer because he wasn’t impressed by the standard movie trailers he was spending time in during movie shoots. “I got it in the days when movies moved slower,” he told Bonhams Magazine. “I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly décor and horribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request.”

“You haven’t lived well until you survive a movie-stopping thunderstorm in an Airstream while on location in Carolina,” Hanks told Bonhams. “But, more than anything, an Airstream is gorgeous and cozy, which is why everyone who visited mine went away wanting one.”
