With an interceptionless streak of 324 pass attempts that will push toward the all-time record if it continues into the first few games of the season, it’s hard to envision Goff playing better than he did last year. Orr’s prediction of “at least” 28 touchdowns and 4,400 yards assumes a repeat of 2022 (29 touchdowns and 4,438 yards). Some might say Goff is the Lions’ long-term quarterback, so why not just extend him ASAP? Talks are going on to some degree, but relatively speaking there’s time before it really becomes a thing. Ideally, Goff would put together another good season in 2023 before the Lions commit to him beyond 2024.
While the quarterback position is a unique entity, the Lions shouldn’t be pressured and surely won’t be pressured to pony up an extension for Goff if he plays well for a handful of games to start the season. Goff’s agent wouldn’t be blamed for wanting to strike a deal while the iron remains hot, but the Lions can stay patient.
A midseason agreement on a contract extension, in the middle of the coming season, between the Lions and Goff seems to be on the unlikelier end of the range of possible outcomes. It’s not necessarily “bold” to predict it will happen, it’s just patently unlikely to go down that way.
How much time is left on Jared Goff's contract?
By Brad Berreman | Jun 2, 2023 The idea of the Detroit Lions signing Jared Goff to a contract extension is partly a study of contradictions. He’s got two years left on his contract, so it’s not all that urgent.
He’s got two years left on his contract, so it’s not all that urgent. But the quarterback market keeps climbing, and as the top rises so does the price for mid-tier guys like Goff. His current contract is becoming a bargain, so a reworking with an extension could be in play. Oh, but it’s not smart to pay someone coming off one of the best seasons of his career like Goff is. Levis fought to keep his head above water week in and week out against SEC competition. He’ll be battle-tested for the NFL. Levis played through turf toe for much of the 2022 season but earned a 90.6 overall grade when healthy under former Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen in 2021.
PFF’s Big Board for the 2024 NFL Draft offers three-year player grades, combine measurables, position rankings, and in-depth player analysis for all of the top draft prospects.Stroud put a stamp on his college tenure in a big way with the second-highest-graded game of his career against Georgia in the College Football Playoff. And with that comes the final edition of the PFF NFL Draft Guide, which comes loaded with scouting reports and advanced data on the class’ top draft prospects. Hooker is a gifted runner with an NFL-caliber right arm, and he made strides in each season as a starter. He just comes with some big red flags between his age (will be 25 as a rookie), a torn ACL in November and the gimmicky Tennessee offense.Young is the best playmaker at the quarterback position in the draft class. He can get you a bucket. Young earned a 92.2 grade in 2021 when he won the Heisman, and he followed it up with a 91.5 in 2022.
Richardson oozes ability. His highlight reel from his lone season as a starter rivals any you’ll see from a college prospect. He’s still a project, though, and finished with an 80.1 overall grade this past season.
Going into his second season in the league, Houston – who played in more than 50 percent of Detroit’s defensive snaps just once a season ago – wants to become an every-down player.Williams’s 262 carries were the seventh-most in the NFL in 2022, Swift accounted for 99 attempts and free agent Justin Jackson, finished third on the team with 42 rushes. In total, Detroit has 403 vacated running back carries, according to 4for4, the most in the league by far. That total accounts for 94.6% of their carries at the position from the previous season, which also leads the league by a wide margin.
The effort will start with third-year run-stopper Alim McNeill. After taking an encouraging step of growth last season, he’s poised to step in and become a leader amongst Detroit’s defense.
Despite the turnover, there’s reason to believe Detroit could make strides on the ground this season. Johnson is back for another year to call the offense, guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai is set to return from injury to an offensive line ranked No. 5 by PFF and defensive upgrades may allow the Lions to lean on their rushing attack more often when they’re not playing from behind.
“Goff is in an outstanding offense with one of the best coordinators in football running the show. Depending on the numbers you look at, his stats will make him look like one of the best passers in football, but it’s clear to anybody with a critical eye that that doesn’t quite match reality. Goff ranked 19th last season in PFF passing grade and 30th in big-time throw rate. He is a solid quarterback for the offense he’s in but is not as good as some of the results would suggest.”Additionally, Houston notched 7.5 sacks through his first six games, becoming the first player in NFL history to produce that amount of sacks in such a span to start one’s career. He also became only the fifth player in league history to amass both six sacks and one forced fumble through six career games since at least 1999.
To help combat the struggles, Detroit general manager Brad Holmes traded up in the third round to draft Brodric Martin. The Western Kentucky product is massive, but will need to fine-tune his technique and footwork to be a reliable contributor.

Was Jared Goff Rookie of the Year?
Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff, the 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, and a Push for the Playoffs – Turf Show Times.
At 5’9”, 199 pounds, Gibbs doesn’t necessarily have the physical profile of a lead back. He ironically has a similar build to Swift — and he ran a faster 40-yard dash at the combine — and he could be used similarly to his predecessor. In 2021, Swift played 13 games and logged a career-high 151 carries and added 62 catches. Gibbs could be looking at an even larger workload on the ground, which would put him in line for roughly 175 carries over a full season in addition to his pass-catching work.Although in a limited role, Houston made an immediate impact in his NFL debut. On just five defensive snaps, he proceeded to record two sacks of Bills Pro Bowl quarterback Josh Allen, while also coming up with a fumble recovery. John brings a wealth of sports broadcast experience. In 2013, John had the vision to establish the Detroit Sports Podcast Network. Has recorded over 3000 podcasts analyzing Detroit Sports. Like Jones, he’s back in Detroit beginning in 2023. He’s now on the sidelines, working as the cornerbacks coach and overseeing the development of a new-look secondary. There hasn’t been a timetable laid out for his return from the set-back nearly a year later. Coach Dan Campbell did recently profess that the defensive tackle had been cleared to run on grass.
The wild card in Detroit’s battle on the interior is Levi Onwuzurike. After a decent rookie campaign, he missed all of his second season with a back injury.
Who is the highest paid NFL player?
Lamar Jackson finally has his deal with the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens and Jackson have agreed to terms on a five-year $260 million contract making him the highest-paid player in the NFL averaging $52 million-per-year.
The next big move came on the first day of the draft when the front office shockingly selected Gibbs 12th overall. Soon after that pick, Swift was traded to the Eagles for draft compensation to complete the running back replacement in the Motor City.As Schein writes, \”Winning eight of its final 10 games last season, Detroit fell just short of the playoffs. Now the Lions head into the 2023 campaign carrying the kind of buzz that is completely foreign to football fans in the Motor City. Shoot, Detroit is currently the favorite to win the division — something this team hasn’t done since 1993, back in the NFC Central days. It makes sense, though, especially considering the present makeup of the NFC North.
“Goff revved up in Year 2 in Detroit, showing the arm, decision-making and efficiency that defined his early breakout years with the Rams. He has thrived in Ben Johnson’s offense supported by a terrific line and diverse weaponry. Goff remains one of the league’s most dependent passers, but the Lions have been smart to play to this strengths and providing him with a high-floor rushing attack. He just needs to get more consistent to play as well outside of Ford Field.”
As Brooks explained, “Defensive coordinators were not able to counter Goff’s ability to operate like a pass-first point guard running a fast break from the pocket. The veteran has two years remaining on his current contract, but the Lions could conceivably move on from the veteran sooner than that, since he’s owed no more guaranteed money after this season, per Over The Cap. They did also just draft a quarterback (Hendon Hooker).”Though both played plenty of snaps, their performance wasn’t highly favored by Pro Football Focus. Buggs received a run- defense grade of 47.0, while Jones was below him with a 46.3 mark.
Another key piece on the defensive line is Isaiah Buggs. After being an under-the-radar addition prior to training camp last season, he became a pivotal part of the interior.
Detroit’s \”roster quality is legit\” now, in the eyes of Schein. It’s one of the reasons why he is buying into the preseason hype surrounding the Lions.
The 6-foot-1, 225-pound defender, in fact, produced at least one sack in each of his first four games, and went on to amass eight sacks, seven tackles for loss and 11 quarterback hits in a mere seven games. During those seven contests, he also helped the Lions record a 5-2 mark.
NFL.com’s Adam Schein is one of the aforementioned pundits who is bullish on Detroit. In fact, he just ranked the Lions No. 2 on his list of NFL franchises most likely to end their long playoff droughts in the upcoming season. Most notably, he overhauled the team’s secondary, adding defensive backs Cam Sutton, Emmanuel Moseley and C.J. Gardner-Johnson in free agency. Plus, he acquired versatile defensive back Brian Branch, out of Alabama, in this past April’s NFL Draft.
The investment the front office made in the draft is as good an indication as any that Gibbs will be heavily involved as a rookie. Though the pick was widely considered a reach, there’s zero question regarding his talent.
Joining the organization in the late stages of Johnson’s career, he was the perfect complimentary wideout. Rarely did he drop passes, compiling a catch percentage of 69.8%.Patrick Mahomes continues to hold the top spot among pundits, while Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Aaron Rodgers continue to garner league-wide respect in quarterback rankings.
Williams was the first shoe to drop. On the heels of his first 1,000-yard season, which saw him lead the league with 17 rushing touchdowns, he signed a three-year, $12-million deal with the Saints a day after free agency began. The Lions were quick to pivot to Montgomery, inking the former Bears’ lead back to a three-year, $18-million contract.
Who is the highest paid quarterback in the NFL 2023?
The Packers are now living in a post-Aaron Rodgers world. The Vikings, who won the division by four games last season, have since parted ways with Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, Eric Kendricks, Za’Darius Smith and Patrick Peterson, among other starters. The Bears can be frisky if Justin Fields makes the leap, but they’re still fresh off an NFL-worst 3-14 season. Long story short: It’s the Lions’ time to shine!\”
The addition of Tulloch stabilized the defense for five seasons. He became the team’s starter immediately after signing in 2011 and would start 67 games in Motown.
How much is Goff getting paid in 2023?
In 2023, Goff will earn a base salary of $20,975,000 and a roster bonus of $5,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $30,975,000 and a dead cap value of $15,000,000.
The Lions moved on from Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift this offseason in favor of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Detroit’s new and improved running back duo is set to inherit a ton of responsibility in one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses. In a power ranking of NFC quarterbacks, the Sporting News has Goff ranked ninth, behind Jalen Hurts, Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr and even Matthew Stafford. The Detroit Lions were plenty active in this year’s free agent cycle. On the defensive side in particular, the organization moved swiftly to secure upgrades. Sports journalist who has covered the Detroit Lions the past three NFL seasons. And now, fans and pundits alike have begun to buy into the idea of the Lions being legitimate contenders to win the NFC North for the first time since 1993 (when the division was still called the NFC Central).Montgomery has the sixth-most rushing attempts since he entered the league in 2019 (915). He logged 200-plus carries each season for Chicago and averaged roughly 15 carries per game. He peaked with 243 rushes for 1,070 yards in 2021 on his way to an RB4 finish, which was aided by a career-high 54 receptions. Montgomery should be in line for his fifth straight year with more than 200 carries and his efficiency may see an uptick behind a much better offensive line.No one is confusing Montgomery for an explosive runner. Only two of his carries in 2022 went for more than 20 yards and his longest rush of the season went for 28 yards. But his 20 broken tackles and 2.0 yards after contact per attempt help offset the lack of big plays.
Editor’s Note: Welcome to the second annual installment of “The Replacements,” an SI Fantasy series focused on vacated volume that projects how teams will replace production year-to-year. This offseason, we’re analyzing the six teams with the highest percentage of available targets and the six teams with the highest percentage of available carries heading into 2023.If he’s healthy, his presence will put pressure on the duo of Jones and Buggs. However, he will likely begin training camp as an inactive and could start the season on the PUP list.
Arriving in 2015, he immediately became a top target for Matthew Stafford. He was a serviceable member of the receiving corps for his first two seasons, recording at least 800 yards in each.
Schein listed the N.Y. Jets, the winners of the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes this offseason, as the franchise most likely to end its prolonged playoff drought in 2023.
Signing in 2003, Bly immediately became a key part of Detroit’s secondary. He enjoyed four of the best seasons of his career in Motown, starting 54 games.
In 2019, Sports Illustrated Media Group, a historical sports media outlet, partnered with Detroit Sports Podcast to provide daily Lions content for their growing and expanding digital media outlet.
Montgomery’s stats in his final season with the Bears do not jump off the page. He finished with a workman-like line of 201 carries for 801 yards to go along with five scores. Montgomery’s 4.0 yards per carry was the second-best mark of his career but he set career-lows in carries, yards and touchdowns as quarterback Justin Fields took off as a runner. The veteran, in all, had 4,296 receiving yards in his first stint with the Lions. Detroit is hoping the 33-year-old will bring a similar level of production in his second go-around with the organization.
When Calvin Johnson Jr. announced his retirement following the 2016 season, Jones immediately filled the void. He had his first career 1,000-yard season a year later in 2017.
After a productive start to his career in Seattle, Tate signed with the Lions and became one of the best receivers of his era. He caught at least 90 passes in all four of his full seasons in Detroit and went past 1,000 yards three times.Over seven campaigns with the Lions, he nailed 84 % of his kicks including 38 from beyond 50 yards. Since he left ahead of the ’21 season, Detroit has struggled to find the consistent leg.
Unfortunately for him, the injury cost him what would’ve been his second playoff appearance as a Lion. He helped the team qualify in his first season of 2011, but was limited to just three games in ’14.
Quin was part of two playoff teams in Detroit and made his only career Pro Bowl appearance in 2014. He retired following his final season with the Lions.Gibbs enjoyed the finest season of his collegiate career at Alabama after spending two seasons at Georgia Tech. He set career-highs across the board: 151 carries, 926 yards, seven touchdowns and an impressive 6.1 yards per carry. (He also did plenty of damage for the Crimson Tide as a pass-catcher; you can read more about his potential impact as a receiver here.)
The Lions laid the blueprint last season for having two successful fantasy running backs when Williams finished as the RB13 and Swift (in 14 games) was the RB21. Montgomery and Gibbs are about as close to a one-to-one replacement as Detroit could get for their outgoing running backs. Montgomery (26) is younger than Williams (28) and Gibbs (21) is younger than Swift (24), so it was a good move for their long-term outlook. The touchdown production might not be there for Montgomery the way it was for Williams but the volume certainly will be. Montgomery’s situation undoubtedly improved and with an average draft position of RB25, three rounds after Gibbs (RB13), Montgomery feels like a value at RB2 or flex. As for Gibbs, he might do more damage through the air, but even just 10 carries per game gets him up to 170 on the year, which is more than Swift ever logged. Gibbs is walking into a very fantasy-friendly situation with a veteran in the room to do damage between the tackles, a stout offensive line to clear running lanes and a sharp offensive mind in Johnson to set him up for success.
As training camp grows near, the team’s best moves are worth revisiting. Here are the organization’s six best free agent signings since the NFL adopted its current form of free agency in 1993:\”For me, I’ve got to get on the field,” Houston said, via the Detroit Free Press, earlier this offseason. “I don’t know what that looks like, but I got to figure something out. Just like last year, it was just like, they didn’t really know where to put me. I feel like it’s kind of similar, the same way. They don’t really know where to put me, and so I’m kind of that guy, hopefully I can be a chess piece and not too much of a liability, I guess, where I really can only play one position, where you can move me in different ways and put me on the field. So, that’s really my goal: to get the team to be able to trust me enough to get to that point.” Chirco’s work include NFL columns, analyzing potential Detroit Lions prospects coming out of college, NFL draft coverage and analysis of events occurring in the NFL. It was the most active the team has been in recent years. General manager Brad Holmes is hoping the moves he made this offseason will pan out among the team’s best. After starting the 2022 campaign with a dismal 1-6 mark, Dan Campbell, in his second season at the helm, guided the Lions to an 8-2 finish. Subsequently, Detroit posted a winning record for the first time since the 2017 season.
The fourth-round pick was the eighth quarterback taken in the 2016 class, but a back injury to Tony Romo forced Prescott onto the field. This ended up being a gift for Dallas, which went on to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Prescott was a bit of a surprise winner over teammate Ezekiel Elliott, who led the NFL with 1,631 rushing yards. However, the quarterback was every bit as impressive with 3,667 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also added six touchdowns on the ground while leading the Cowboys to a 13-3 record. Bosa was considered close to a sure thing as the No. 3 overall pick and lived up to expectations with an outstanding first year in the NFL. With a full offseason of training, he could be even scarier next season in Los Angeles.Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott took home the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award on Saturday, while Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. While Goff is never going to lean heavily on the deep ball, he has thrown a few dimes in recent weeks. Week 14 was his first career game with multiple touchdown passes thrown 30-plus yards downfield. His deep touchdown to Jameson Williams was on a broken coverage, but this one to D.J. Chark was perfectly thrown. This is the same formula that made him successful with the Rams. Goff leads the NFL in touchdown passes (12) and ranks fourth in EPA per dropback on play action this season. In 2018, when he helped the Rams reach the Super Bowl, he led the NFL in touchdown passes and ranked fourth in EPA per dropback on play action.
One of the (unflattering) comparisons made between Goff and Matthew Stafford after the trade was their arm strength. It was warranted, too. Stafford made big-time deep throws to lead the Rams to a Super Bowl that Goff didn’t consistently make during his Rams tenure.Jared Goff is the hottest quarterback in the NFL, and the Lions are making a playoff push. Not a typo. The Lions have won five of their past six games, and Goff leads the NFL in EPA per dropback over that span. 31% of Goff’s plays have used play action in his last six games, the fifth-highest rate in the league. He was using play action at the 18th-highest rate (24%) in his first eight games of the season. Seven of his 10 touchdown passes in his last six games have come off play action. Most would consider his 2018 Super Bowl run with the Rams his best season. There are certainly some similarities in offensive styles to that team, but Los Angeles’ supporting cast was flat out better than Detroit’s.You can see why the Lions lead the NFL in red zone efficiency this season. Jamaal Williams has been piling up short touchdowns, and the play action has worked perfectly off of it.
Who is the hottest quarterback in the NFL right now?
Jared Goff is the hottest quarterback in the NFL, and the Lions are making a playoff push.
Those are the throws Goff will need to make for Detroit to finish off a miraculous turnaround. Don’t forget, the Lions could easily be looking at a six-game win streak (instead of winners of five of six) had Goff completed this deep ball late against the Bills on Thanksgiving.Goff is having a career year and one of the best seasons by a quarterback in the NFL this year. Also not a typo. He ranks fourth in EPA per dropback this season and sixth in ESPN’s total quarterback rating (QBR) — both the best ranks in a season in his career. It’s certainly a nice stretch, but full disclosure, I’m not completely sold that the peak Rams’ version of Jared Goff is back. Goff’s hot streak has come against five struggling defenses. The Lions’ five wins since Week 9 were against the Packers, Bears, Giants, Jaguars and Vikings, who all rank in the bottom half of the league in defensive EPA per game. Minnesota, in particular, has one of the worst secondaries in the league. So, what’s changed? Well, one of the biggest reasons the Lions are winning lately is their improved defense. But, Goff has also been more efficient because they are leaning into his bread-and-butter: play action. What Goff is doing this season has to be considered the best season of his career. He’s never ranked this high in Total QBR (sixth) or EPA per dropback (fourth). His ranks are similar to 2018 across the board.
Just over a month ago, he was still the struggling quarterback the Rams paired with two first-round picks to offload his contract and acquire Matthew Stafford in pursuit of a Super Bowl.
Just over a month ago, those statements sounded like an impossibility. The Lions were 1-6 and Goff had a 4-16-1 record up to that point in his career with Detroit.Next up, Detroit travels to MetLife Stadium to play the Jets, who have the second-best coverage unit and best defense in the league, according to Pro Football Focus grades. Goff has thrown just two touchdown passes on the road this year and notably lost, 29-0, to the Patriots on the road in Week 5, probably their toughest matchup of the season prior to this one.
Like most people, I assumed the Lions would stumble to the finish line, draft a quarterback in 2023, and Goff’s career would fizzle out. Now, the Lions are still expected to draft a QB in 2023, but the narrative has completely changed around Goff. Maybe he can lead the Lions to the playoffs this season and be a solid starter in 2023.
If they can win, they’ll likely be a half-game back of a playoff spot with three games to go, all against teams with a losing record. I want to see Goff and the Lions deliver in New York, and then beat the teams they should beat, before crowning him, but he’s certainly put himself in a good position for the stretch run and beyond.Credit the Lions for leaning into Goff’s strength from his Rams days and for the design on these plays. This fake pitch sucked the linebacker in and left Josh Reynolds wide open for a touchdown against the Vikings.
