Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness. The mower deck on the John Deere JS40 has a cutting width of 21 inches which is standard for most residential push lawnmowers. Like on most JD walk behind, self propelled lawnmowers, there is a choice of 3 different options for dealing with the grass clippings after they have been cut on the JD JS40. People who want to leave their lawn looking incredibly neat will tend to use the bagger to collect the clippings and dispose of them away from the lawn. Others will use the optional mulching system to turn the clippings into a mulch that both rots fast and is also highly nutritious. The lazier people will tend to use neither and will simply discharge the clippings out the side of the mower deck. The rear wheels on the John Deere JS40 are a little bigger, each measuring 9×2 (9 inch diameter, 2 inch width), while the front wheels each measure 8×2 (8 inch diameter, 2 inch width). The cutting height of the mower deck ranges from a high of 4.2 inches above the ground down to a low of 1.2 inches. Adjustments need to be made by the wheels to raise and lower the mower deck. The John Deere JS40 walk behind lawnmower is part of the JS range of push lawn mowers that also include the John Deere AS30 as well as the John Deere AS20 push mowers. The engine that powers the JD JS40 is a Briggs and Stratton engine. The max power output from this 4 stroke engine is 7 hp. The engine incorporates a operator presence system which cuts the engine out the moment you let go of the operating handle for safety. This engine powers both the wheels and the mower deck. While your John Deere machine is certainly built with quality parts, they have a limited life. Good news is you can easily service your machine yourself using a John Deere maintenance kit or service kits or by getting the specific John Deere part needed to keep your John Deere mower or tractor running for a long time. These are the parts on your John Deere JS40 Walk Behind Mower & Parts List that need to be regularly serviced.Common sense goes a long ways when maintaining your machine. If you have extreme heat, dust, or terrain that you operate in you, service frequency will need to increase.
Outside of the schedule service intervals, you may need a part for a quick repair. While this is not an inclusive list of all the parts for a John Deere JS40 Walk Behind Mower & Parts List, these are the typical parts that we see purchased for your model.
I have owned this lawnmower for over three years and have had very few issues with it. i love the mulching or bagging options. It is not difficult for a single person to empty the lawn bag like in some other lawn mowers. It has always started without problems. The only issue that we have every had with this lawnmower was that when filling the lawnmower with gas be careful not to spill any gas on the lawnmower since the air filter is right next to the gas tank. If you get gas on the air filter compartment it will get on the filter and need to be replaced for the lawnmower will smoke and cut in and out.. I learned this first hand this summer when I thought the lawnmower was dieing when it was just human error. This lawnmower has worked great for us and I am glad we spent the extra money to get a reliable lawnmower like John deere. It is great to have the self propelled lawn mower that is easy to turn and back up.Bought this mower new from Wal Mart. Used it three times and it hasn’t started since. Contacted John Deere and they tell me that there is nothing they can do because I refused to purchase service plan. I didn’t buy service plan because it’s a John deere, thats the only reason I bought itMy local lowes has a John Deere JS40 walk behind mower for $300. It was returned because the drive belt for the self-propel was broken. So, not a major repair at all. Other than that, it’s brand new. Anyone know anything about these mowers? I’m the market for a new mower and good mulching ability is critical to me.Since the mower was returned, is there a warranty? Does John Deere honor the warranty on returned equipment? $300 is probably a good price provided you like the mower.I BOUGHT MINE AT LOWES. IT HAD A STICK CAUGHT IN THE BELT DURING TO THE FIRST 2MONTH, THE LOCAL DEALER CHARGED ME 45 DOLLARS TO REMOVE IT..THEN THE SELF CONTROL STOP WORKING.COULD NOT CUT LAWN BUT 2 TIMES BEFORE HAVING TO REPLACE THE BELT,THE DEALER SERVICE SAID IT WOULD COST ME AT A RATE OF 90 DOLLARS PLUS.NOW THE LEFT REAR WHEEL TURN SHAFT IS WORN OUT. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER QNE OF THIS BRAND. ALSO HAD TO RE PLACE ALL TH CABLES AT MY COST THE FIRST MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP,IT WAS THE WAIST OF MY MONEYThe Briggs OHV mower engine was introduced about 10 years ago. It features the same displacement, bore & stroke as the Quantum series engine. The engine is several pounds heavier than the Quantum series. The carburetor is easy to service – but not quite as easy as the Quantum. My opinion – Before buying, look at the JS-20 for the following reasons. The engine is the older flat head design and weighs less. This Quantum series engine is equipped with the “ready start” system that (in my opinion) is easier to start than any other brand engine including the OHV Briggs on the JS40 The mower has the regular front wheels – not the caster style. The throttle plate does not have a stop screw for the idle position as the engine is designed for governed slow speed. The throttle plate wedged in the closed position on the engine I have – even tho the throttle control was set for full speed. This created some hard starts until I discovered what was happening. A boss was provided so I installed my own throttle stop screw. At my 7300 foot altitude, the compression release reduces the starting compression to about 30 – 40 psi. Normally, the engine started ok. Power was very good. The cast iron sleeve is a good feature.
This seems to be a common problem with the JS40. The Lowe’s I bought mine from also had a used one for sale with this problem repaired. I got to use my brand new one for 20 minutes before something broke and the self-propelled quit working. DO NOT BUY unless you get the full warranty and have a dealer that can service it nearby.
