The volatility of gas prices in recent years means shopping for a fuel-efficient vehicle now can lead to significant savings at the pump down the road. Of course, if you want to avoid the pump entirely, an all-electric vehicle will be your best bet; but if you’re not ready to make the leap into EV ownership, the next best option is a gas-only, hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicle with generous fuel economy ratings. The Toyota Prius gained a new 2.0-liter engine and lithium-ion battery in its 2023 redesign, and the updates boosted the hybrid’s power output and fuel efficiency. The 2023 NX 450h+ combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, multiple electric motors and a lithium-ion battery and gets 84 combined mpg-e for electric and gas and 36 mpg combined in hybrid mode. The SUV’s all-electric range is rated at 37 miles.

The SUV’s all-electric range is rated up to 31 miles with a total range of 440 miles, but it managed to exceed the estimated all-electric range in our real-world test.

For more information about the Seltos’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
The Seltos has received a refresh for its exterior and interior styling for 2024. A restyled grille and updated lighting elements elevate the SUV’s exterior along with new wheel designs and a rear light bar that connects the taillamps. The cabin receives an updated infotainment panel with two large screens and the current model’s more traditional shift lever appears to have been replaced with a rotary controller. The Seltos’s optional turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder now makes 195 horsepower, up 20 horsepower from last year’s model, and adds a new eight-speed automatic transmission to replace the previous seven-speed unit. A rugged-looking X-Line model also joins the lineup and features unique exterior styling.

Kia’s warranty is the best in the industry, and the company continues to offer 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain coverage on its models. The only other rivals that can match it are SUVs from sister company Hyundai.
With its stylish look, spacious cabin, and fun-to-drive edge, the 2024 Seltos earns its place in Kia’s lineup, which is full of other vehicles with similar values. The Seltos slots in between the smaller Soul and the larger Sportage, but its slightly-larger-than-subcompact size makes room for more cargo than rivals such as the Hyundai Kona and the Nissan Kicks. A styling refresh for 2024 makes the Seltos even more attractive than before and its interior has been updated with better infotainment technology too. A duo of four-cylinders is available, including a 195-hp turbocharged engine that provides good pep. Most models come standard with all-wheel drive, and even the base-model Seltos provides good value and utility, making it one of our favorite small SUVs.The Seltos’s infotainment setup has drastically changed for 2024, with a new seamless panel stretching two-thirds of the dashboard serving as both a digital gauge display and an infotainment touchscreen. This arrangement is optional and similar to the offerings of other modern Kia models. A smaller display with an analog gauge cluster is standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come on every model but SiriusXM satellite radio and an onboard wi-fi hotspot are options.

Inside, the Seltos offers noticeably more space for people and cargo than the Hyundai Kona. The materials used throughout the cabin are refined enough to seem right at home in the showroom next to the brand’s excellent Telluride SUV. Interior ambient lighting is standard on the upscale SX model and can be set to pulse along with the music like the system Kia offers in the smaller Soul SUV. During our test drive of the pre-facelift model, the cargo area easily swallowed our suitcases, backpacks, and photo bag; in our testing, we fit eight carry-on suitcases in the cargo hold and 20 with the rear seats folded.
The EPA estimates that the Seltos will deliver fairly efficient MPG figures. Highway fuel economy is estimated to be as high as 34 mpg for front-wheel-drive models with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, an all-wheel-drive Seltos with the turbocharged 1.6-liter managed 30 mpg. For more information about the Seltos’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Kia offers two different four-cylinder engines in the Seltos: a 2.0-liter that makes 147 horsepower or a turbocharged 1.6-liter that pumps out 195 horsepower. We sampled the Seltos with the turbocharged 1.6-liter and found its power to be more than adequate. While the base engine is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the turbo comes with an eight-speed automatic. All-wheel drive comes standard on all but the S and EX trims. The Seltos offers a firm but mostly smooth ride, and handling is sharp for an SUV—it’s far more entertaining and composed than rivals such as the Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. When we get a chance to test the updated Seltos at our home base, we’ll update this story with acceleration test results and more driving impressions. The average fuel economy is not displayed for more accurate calculation if the vehicle does not drive more than 10 seconds or 50 meters (0.03 miles) since the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to ON. To clear the average fuel economy manually, press the OK button on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the average fuel economy is displayed. To make the average fuel economy be reset automatically whenever refueling, select the “Fuel economy auto reset” mode in User Setting menu of the LCD Windows (Refer to More Details).

I bought the Turbo charged version of the 2024 Seltos. I really like the styling, ride, features, color (Mars Orange), and it has some great pick up with the turbo.Performance for the 2024 Seltos comes from two engines, with the LX, S and EX variants getting a 146-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Higher trims come with a 195-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on the S and EX trims, and all-wheel drive is available; the rest of the Seltos family gets standard AWD. The 2024 Seltos gets an EPA-estimated 28/34/31 mpg city/highway/combined with FWD and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while adding AWD bumps these figures down to 27/31/29 mpg. Meanwhile, the AWD-only 1.6-liter four-cylinder achieves an EPA-estimated 25/27/26 mpg.

Inside, the Seltos now offers an optional panoramic display that combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touchscreen into one unit; it comes bundled with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 4.2-inch digital gauge cluster and a smaller 8-inch touchscreen are standard on the base model. The SUV also comes with Kia’s Digital Key 2 Touch app that allows owners to lock, unlock and start their Seltos with a paired smartphone or tablet.
Kia unveiled the refreshed 2024 Seltos at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, and now the Korean brand has officially announced pricing for the SUV, with the model starting at $25,715 (all pricing includes the $1,325 destination fee).I recently purchased the SX after test driving several other makes and models, including bigger classes such as the CR-V. I love the way sedans and wagons handle and wanted something as close as possible. The new Seltos comes pretty close and it’s very sporty and agile. The turbo has more than enough power. I’ve been using the stop-go feature in the Washington DC commute and it’s been driving itself up 395 in heavy stop and go traffic. The vehicle feels a lot more substantial than what the price would indicate. It’s an awesome vehicle and can’t be beat for the money. The exterior styling of the Seltos was refreshed for the 2024 model year, with the front end getting a reworked “tiger nose” grille and new headlights; new LED projector headlamps are available. Meanwhile, the rear of the SUV gets a new light bar that connects the taillights, among other subtle tweaks. I love the new color, pluton blue. I love everything about this car. It handles great, love the computer graphics, performance, gas mileage. I went in with the seltos in mind and got even more than expected.

How long do they typically last? How often should you replace your brakes? We’ve got answersToday, Kia is one of the strongest contenders in the automotive industry. However, nobody saw this development coming, especially with the South Korean manufacturer’s reputation for “cheap imports” back in the 90s. Fast-forward to today, Kia makes some of the most popular vehicles on the road, including the Telluride, Sportage, and Sorento – an incredible redemption arc indeed. As of this writing, the Kia Seltos only has three commercially available models 2021, 2022, and the current 2023 Seltos. While there’s no average reliability rating for the Seltos yet, Kia as a brand has an above-average reliability score of 4.0 out of 5.0 – the third most reliable brand out of 32 companies, according to RepairPal. With that said, we can only recommend one Kia Seltos to avoid: The best part? There were numerous conversations about timing chain issues that affect the 2021 Kia Seltos. In a Reddit post, a driver reported experiencing fluttering noises from the engine at around 8k miles. Then, the driver heard “gear grinding” noises when accelerating. The Redditor wrote:According to Consumer Reports, the 2021 Kia Seltos scored a reliability verdict of 3.0 out of 5.0, which is an average score. In reality, most people who own a Kia Seltos haven’t yet put in that much mileage, so reports about its reliability are pretty scarce. However, CR scored the 2021 Seltos with a customer satisfaction rating of 1.0 out of 5.0, so customer surveys indicate that this car may not provide you with a worry-free ownership experience. Overall, buying a used 2021 Seltos might not be a bad idea, especially when you’re looking for a good deal.

After inspection, the issue was determined to be caused by a worn timing chain. Basically, the timing chain went bad, and tiny metal shards went into the oil, damaging the engine. If left unchecked, this could cause long-term damage to the engine. Eventually, the driver had the engine replaced by Kia, but he had to go through hoops to get the dealership to cover the cost. The CoPilot car shopping app is the easiest way to buy a car. Meanwhile, two Seltos owners detailed how their car’s transmission overheated and had to pull to the side of the road to investigate. This issue seems not as widespread as the aforementioned transmission problem, but it’s still worth keeping an eye out for. Ultimately, these transmission issues are more frustrating since they occur at practically brand-new vehicles with mileage less than 10k miles.

As for the best Kia Seltos years you can safely buy used, the 2022 and 2022 Kia Seltos are your remaining options (unless you want to wait for the 2024 model), and fortunately, they’re pretty good.

For starters, a few reports detailed how the Seltos’ transmission just stopped shifting correctly. Symptoms include gear slippage, jerking, and outright failure. One user from Garrettsville wrote:We hesitate to call this an isolated case, but since there’s a widespread recall, this timing chain issue is worth considering if you’re buying a used 2021 Seltos. The segment needed Kia and it got it. Late last year, when Kia announced that the Kia Seltos would be coming to North America for the 2021 model year, we were delighted. After all, Kia has really needed an AWD-equipped model in the subcompact crossover space to compete with less exciting models like the Chevy Trax and Honda HR-V that sell purely because of their AWD drivetrain.
One question that is of high importance in the subcompact SUV space has been unanswered until now: how often will the 2021 Kia Seltos take you to the fuel pump? Those numbers are out per the EPA and we’ve got some great news! The fuel system stores and supplies fuel to the car to help drive the engine. Fuel is mixed with air, atomized and vaporized in the engine intake system. It is then compressed in the engine cylinder and ignited which produces energy to move the pistons. There are different engine layouts and designs but most of them work in the same basic way.

Misaligned Tires: Tires that are low or out of alignment can lead to a drop in fuel efficiency. Checking the tire pressure and have the alignment checked on regular basis can help prevent this problem.
Stuck Brake Caliper: A stuck caliper on a disc brake or a stuck shoe on a drum brake can lead to a serious decline in gas mileage. In addition, any brake issue can make the vehicle dangerous to drive. If the decline in efficiency is accompanied by the vehicle pulling to one side, the brake system should be inspected immediately.Clogged Fuel Filter: A clogged fuel filter will also cause problems with gas mileage. The fuel filter screens out contaminants in the fuel, and over time it will become clogged. Fuel filters need to be replaced periodically.

A few of these issues are easy to fix but others are an indicator of a much more serious problem. Issues related to the fuel system will eventually lead to a rough running engine, stalling, and a car that won’t start at all.
Bad or Dirty Spark Plugs: Spark plugs ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber. If they are dirty or working incorrectly, it can cause the engine to misfire, leading to poor engine performance. This can lead to a lack of power as well as a big decline in fuel efficiency.

Malfunctioning Mass Airflow Sensor: A mass airflow sensor detects the amount of air coming into the fuel injection system. It delivers that information to the vehicle’s computer, which crunches the numbers and then delivers the proper amount of fuel to the air in the vehicle. A dirty airflow sensor will degrade fuel efficiently and lead to a rough idle and even stalling as the problem progresses. Dirty Fuel Injectors: Fuel injectors spray fuel into the cylinders where it is mixed with air and ignited. Over time the fuel injector system can become clogged. This can lead to a drop in fuel efficiency as well as slow acceleration and the car not having enough power. If caught early, simply cleaning the injectors can solve the problem. As it progresses, the injectors may have to be replaced. Poor gas mileage, especially a sudden drop in fuel efficiency, can be blamed on a number of issues. It can also be an indicator of a much more serious issue that if left un-repaired, can develop into an expensive repair.A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the source and cause of the poor gas mileage issue and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs. On average, the cost for a Kia Soul Car is getting worse gas mileage Inspection is $95 with $0 for parts and $95 for labor. Prices may vary depending on your location. Dirty Oxygen Sensor: An oxygen sensor measures exactly how rich or lean the exhaust gases are when they leave the combustion chamber. The data is used by the vehicle computer to adjust the amount of fuel entering the engine. If the sensor is dirty or failing it can lead to a drop in miles per gallon. It can also lead to failed emission tests and a rough idle.A mechanic will inspect your fuel injectors, spark plugs, airflow sensor, tires and other important components to reach an accurate diagnosis. It may be necessary for the mechanic to test drive the car to produce acceptable results and pinpoint the source of the problem.

Defective Fuel Pump: Fuel delivery issues can drastically affect fuel efficiency. The fuel pump pulls fuel from the gas tank to the fuel injectors. The fuel pump can become clogged or malfunction. A bad fuel pump can lead to a rough running engine because it is not getting enough fuel. This will lead to a decline in gas mileage. If this issue is not addressed it will lead to a rough, idle, sputtering and stalling. There are dozens of problems that can lead to a drop in gas mileage, some of them are serious and some can be easily corrected. Here are some of the more common issues that can affect the fuel efficiency of most cars.

When the system is working as designed, and under certain conditions, maximum fuel efficiency will be achieved. Numerous factors can have an affect on fuel efficiency so it is usually a constantly changing number but a serious and sudden drop in miles per gallon is cause for concern and the vehicle should be inspected.

The 2024 Kia Seltos starts at $24,390 for the base LX trim. It comes with standard all-wheel drive and an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The S trim ($24,990) loses standard all-wheel drive but gains niceties such as a larger touch screen, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot and additional driver-assistance features. The EX ($25,790) features synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats and wireless device charging. The Honda HR-V is a strong contender in the subcompact SUV class, and it shares some positive traits with the Seltos. Both vehicles have spiffy and spacious interiors, easy-to-use infotainment systems and decent ride-and-handling dynamics. The HR-V has a somewhat underpowered engine, and unlike with the Kia, you can’t opt for a stronger powertrain. The HR-V also has slightly worse fuel economy and less cargo room than the Seltos.

Finally, the new X-Line model replaces the Nightfall Edition trim. The X-Line features more rugged exterior styling with blacked-out wheels and paneling. If you don’t mind sticking with the weaker base engine, we recommend the EX trim. It comes with a ton of additional standard comfort, tech and driver-assistance features for only $1,400 more than the entry-level model. If you regularly ferry around passengers or drive on the highway, we suggest moving up to the X-Line or SX to attain the more potent turbo-four engine.
