What is an army shadow box?
The box safely contains the sailor’s “shadow” until he/she is safely ashore, at which time the shadow box can be given to the sailor in a presentation ceremony. Ideally, a military shadow box serves not only as a reminder of achievements and accomplishments, but also as a summation, a culmination, of a military career.
Military shadow boxes were originally simple boxes in which sailors retiring from shipboard service carried their belongings ashore. Superstition held that if the sailor’s shadow touched shore before he set foot upon it, he would suffer ill luck. By carrying his belongings, a metaphorical “shadow” of himself, enclosed within the box he could ensure he would touch land before his “shadow”.By tradition, shadow boxes are typically presented to members of the United States Armed Forces upon retirement. These shadow boxes will usually contain the various medals and awards a person has earned through a military career, the flags of both their country and their military service branch, and their final badge of rank. A similar case, called a uniform display case, displays an entire military uniform with correct insignia placement.
A display case may be freestanding on the floor, or built-in (usually a custom installation). Built-in displays may be mounted on the wall, may act as room partitions, or may be hung from the ceiling. On occasion, display cases are built into the floor, such as at the Museum of Sydney (in Sydney, Australia), where the remains of drains and privies are shown in their original context, along with other archeological artifacts.
They can ship pre-assembled or knockdown (in pieces to be assembled by the customer). Pre-assembled showcases are assembled (and usually tested) by the manufacturer, and are shipped ready-to-use. Knockdown showcases are usually lower in price and cheaper to ship, but may be of poorer quality than pre-assembled, and may arrive missing pieces.There are three types of freestanding showcases: counter, middle floor (mid-floor), and wall. For this reason, the counter displays are most relevant for retail stores. The middle floor cases are built to display objects from all sides, and are meant to be placed in the middle of the room. Wall showcases are meant to be placed against a wall, where the products are displayed and accessed from the same side. These last two types are used heavily – not only by stores – but also by museums, schools, and especially in homes to showcase valuable items or collections.
A display case (also called showcase, display cabinet, shadow box, or vitrine) is a cabinet with one or often more transparent tempered glass (or plastic, normally acrylic for strength) surfaces, used to display objects for viewing. A display case may appear in an exhibition, museum, retail store, restaurant, or house. Often, labels are included with the displayed objects, providing information such as description or prices. In a museum, the displayed cultural artifacts are normally part of the museum’s collection, or are part of a temporary exhibition. In retail or a restaurant, the items are normally being offered for sale. A trophy case is used to display sports trophies or other awards.
Traditionally, military personnel would keep all their personal belongings in a trunk which would accompany them on their travels. During the retirement ceremony or upon retirement, many members of the military, particularly in the naval service, use the lift out tray found in a well-worn trunk as their shadow box. Some retirees also maximize the display space found in these trunks by also incorporating shadow boxes into the lid compartment as well. An added benefit by having a shadow box in an antique trunk is all of the storage space for uniforms, hats, photograph albums, and any other service memorabilia collected over the years.
Display cases are typically made by specialist companies with a background in woodworking or welding, and come in standard sizes or often are custom order. Display cases are often designed with security in mind and are normally lockable. They also are made in variety of styles, shapes, and materials as available at a store fixture supplier. Conservation grade cases are used to display valuable artifacts in museums, libraries, and archives. These cases are designed to provide a tightly controlled environment free from chemical pollutants.Step Three: With the artwork already affixed to the mat blank, assemble the strips on the mat blank, bringing them close to, but not against, the edges of the blank (Figure T‑4).
Step One: Using a 90-degree cutting head adjusted to its lowest depth setting, cut a sheet of 1⁄8 ” thick foamboard into narrow strips (Figure T‑1). The length and width of those strips depends on the size of your mat and the width of its borders. The strips should always be slightly narrower than half the width of the border. So if the mat border is 2″, the strip should be about 7⁄8 ” wide. You don’t have to be exact. The main objective is to conceal the strips beneath the mat so they aren’t glimpsed when the mat is viewed from the side. The length of the first two strips should be slightly less than the length of the mat. Again, you don’t have to be exact. If the length of the mat is 20″, the first two strips can be 19″. The length of the remaining two strips must take into account the presence of the first two strips. They should be shorter than the mat is wide, minus the width of the other two strips. So if, say, the mat is 16″ wide and the other two strips are 7⁄8 ” wide, strips of 13 1⁄2 ” ought to suffice.
Occasionally, for aesthetic effect, framers want to raise the window mat off the artwork so it appears to be suspended above the artwork, sort of hovering there. This is called a shadow box effect. There is some confusion with this terminology since “shadow box” also refers to the type of deep frame used for displaying three-dimensional objects, also known as an object box. What we’re talking about here is a shadow box effect.The shadow box effect works best when the artwork is displayed as a matted float. As a reminder, a matted float involves first mounting the artwork on a mat blank and then cutting a window in the mat that’s larger than the artwork, revealing the edges of the artwork and a margin of the mat blank within the window. Selecting the color of the mat blank, then, is much like selecting the color of the undermat in a double mat. It is an accent color which surrounds the artwork in a narrow band. In the case of a shadowbox effect, that accent color does not end abruptly at the edge of the mat’s window but fades into the shadowy recesses under the mat which is raised above it. The technique for float mounting the artwork to the mat blank will be covered in the next chapter. Here we will concern ourselves with raising the window mat above the mat blank, a procedure accomplished with the use of foamboard.
Once your form is down, you can start focusing on your technique. Where are you struggling? Do you have any bad habits in the ring, like looking down or poor footwork? Do you want to improve certain skills like your jab, straight punch, or uppercuts? Zone in and perfect those strikes. This is a great time to work on punching combos as well. Drill them as much as you can and really reinforce the muscle memory until they become second nature.Shadowboxing is the perfect opportunity to focus on your form. There’s no pressure to throw out fast punches at the bag or an opponent, and there’s nothing coming back at you, so you can zone in on your form by practicing your stance and building up good fighting habits.
One of the greatest benefits of shadowboxing is muscle memory. Muscle memory is the phenomenon of being able to perform complex tasks with ease, accuracy, and seemingly on autopilot. This happens after much practice of repeating certain moves over and over again.
Movement and balance are important components of being in the ring. You need to move around your opponent in a strategic way, maintaining your balance while dodging punches or even while striking. What about when you miss a punch? It’s easy to get thrown off balance when you expect to land a hit and instead end up swinging at the air. Shadowboxing is the perfect time to perfect these skills.
Remember, you don’t have the pressure of a bag or an opponent, so shadowboxing is the perfect workout for improving your technique, from punches to footwork, to movement and dodges. Have at it!

While you’re in control of your surroundings and you’re focusing on your form, technique, and movement, your building these important skills into your muscle memory to be able to move about the ring easily and comfortably. The more you practice the skills you want to develop, the more natural they will become for you in the ring. All athletes move through common motor patterns before they step up to compete. Batters take practice swings, wide receivers walk routes, boxers shadowbox. This is part of your body of work. Using the art of shadowboxing is an opportunity to perfect your craft, quiet your mind, and focus inwardly 100%. These moments are rare, especially in the culture we live in. Take advantage of them every time they are presented.Even for those intermediate and advanced contenders, practicing basic boxing stance is important, as it can easily take a backseat when working on new skills.
Focus on your footwork and movement when shadowboxing. It’s a good idea to throw in some switches, side steps, and pivots during your next shadowboxing session. Every action in shadowboxing is about precision, taking the time to execute movement without rushing. There are no commands, nothing to respond to other than taking each movement to completion.
