It was renamed the Terrace I & II under ABC Southeastern Theatres. By the mid-1980’s,the second auditorium was split down the middle into two sections,creating two shoebox auditoriums with smaller screens. By 1988 or 1989,it was split down the middle again as it when from three to six screens creating extra shoebox quads with smaller screens not to mention at the time Janus Theatres bought out the Terrace Theatres from Cineplex Odeon and Plitt Theatres. It remained a six screen cinema until the mid-1990’s when Janus Theatres began construction on a huge 14-plex called the West End Cinemas 14 that was just a half-mile down from the Terrace and nearby Holly Hill Mall that was set to open in November of 1996 to muscle in the competition. The Terrace Theatres closed in December of 1996 and was demolished in 2000. A Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse and a Rite-Aid Pharmacy now sits where the former Terrace Theatres once stood.It was a great place to see some of Hollywood’s best until the mid-1990’s when Janus Theatres began construction on a huge 14-plex theatre just a mile down from the Terrace Theatre and not very far from Holly Hill Mall. When I started, the theater still featured the two large screens only and was a Plitt Theater. The week before RETURN OF THE JEDI was released we showed BLUE THUNDER and BREATHLESS. As Plitt employees we wore red vests. Sometime before I left the job, Cineplex Odeon purchased the showplace and both houses were split, making a total of four screens. Under the new ownership, each associate sported a black vest and a black clip-on bow tie, both of which I still have in addition to one or more name tags. I can’t recall if the additional house splits occurred before or after my departure. Also in my possession is the “THEATRE” portion of the “AN ULTRA-VISION THEATRE” section of the marquee that I salvaged when the building was demolished. Unfortunately the rest of the sign had broken into many pieces due to a combination of the violence of the demolition and its brittleness from age.

By 1987-1988 Greensboro based Janus Theatres Group acquired this theatre(THE TERRACE) after it was bought out by Cineplex Odeon and Plitt Theatres. Janus Theatres also acquired the Janus Theatres 1 & 2 as well after it bought out Brandt Theatres Group(aka Trans Lux Cinemas).Part of the reason this theater was abandoned, besides the better location of the Carousel at a new shopping center right off the Interstate, is because the building just wasn’t very good. There were some flooding issues and the walls were paper thin, causing a lot of sound bleedover in the theater you were sitting in from the next-door theater.
The West End Cinemas was a showplace for great entertainment and all of Burlington and Alamance County loved it. The first theatre to have stadium seating in all auditoriums with the latest Dolby digital sound system and additional features. The West End Cinemas opened to the public on November 22, 1996 and amazingly it served all of Burlington and Alamance County for more than 12 years until its closing in early-2008, when the Carousel Cinemas at Alamance Crossing(just two miles away) muscled out the competition. By 2009, the former “West End Cinemas” site was sold to a developer and was awaiting future use that is yet to be determined. It was demolished in 2017.
This theater was not “muscled out” by the competition. The new Carousel IS West End Cinemas, built by the same company. For a short time, both theaters were open, but as soon as everything could get moved, it was moved.At the time of its opening, the West End Cinemas was the merging of two theatres in Burlington. One was the Terrace Theatres near Holly Hill Mall, and the other was the Janus Theatres(that was formally the Trans-Lux In-Flight Cinema) that was also the Church Street Twin Cinemas. I love going to this movie theater! I just went on Sunday to see Girls Trip with my mother and we had a wonderful time! Yhe movie was great! The popcorn was delicious!Nice, still has a “new” feel, this is the largest (and only) movie complex in the Alamance County / Burlington area. they run all of the latest releases. There is lots of parking, and overall, they do a great job. Very nice.

Ok,,,, this place was not what we expected. The concessions were not all that good. Listed pizza but doesn’t carry it, hot dogs not bad but not a repeat for us. The theater inside looked out dated. Just not a place we will return to for 🎥.
I go strictly for the movies. Went three times within the last week. Always clean! I tend to purchase tickets online ahead of time to ensure availability. They may or may not check them. Concessions are expensive but not different than anywhere else. Facilities are clean and they have popcorn and drink refill stations so you dont have to get back in the concession line. Its a good theater and tickets aren’t unreasonable. If you are looking for some of the souvenir items for certain movies this place doesnt do them. The closest theater that does is in Greensboro so for us its not worth the drive to go anywhere else but here.”

Sure It’s not fancy. Sure it’s a bit run down. Sure some of the seats are broken. But there is a charm about the place. Tickets are $3. Snacks are reasonable AND drink/popcorn refills are FREE! It is a great place to catch a second run of a favorite film or see a second rate film for a few bucks. Sadly it doesn’t play cartoons before the movies anymore. I once read a review from some Chapel Hill rag that was rating area movie theaters in the area. Graham Cinema got an A+ or an F-, depending on whether you had a car or not. I have a car! Last couple of times I went the movie dialogue was a bit difficult to hear. Not sure what happened, but it could use some work.”
