The New Orleans Square Theater is now showing movies and welcoming visitors. Manager Justin Garrison says the movie theater is full of memories and nostalgia for people who grew up in Broken Arrow. Now that it’s back in action, it’s ready for new memories.
“Whenever I was growing up, this was the only movie theater even in town. So, you’d get the Sunday newspaper and see the showtimes in the newspaper, and you get to come here and watch a movie. It was the only place in town to do it,” Garrison said.
Opened on April 25, 1986. It was closed in 2001, but reopened later that year by Movie Star. It had closed again by 2015. It reopened as the New Orleans Square Theatre. By December 2022 it was closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Significant growth in south Broken Area has focused the city’s efforts in revitalizing a once-thriving intersection of Elm Place and New Orleans Street (101st). A Citizens Advisory Committee has been appointed to continue to gather details and make recommendations to the City Council. The Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce is committed to assisting New Orleans Square merchants and encouraging more private investment in the Square. The retail district is home to an array of businesses including retail, restaurants, service-based businesses, and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Businesses and area residents have helped create a vision of a beautifully landscaped, walkable shopping destination. Recent renovation and reuse of the former Hobby Lobby store, the proposed reopening of a movie theater, and other private improvements show that the area is both viable and vital to continued sustained growth in south BA.
