Based on what we know about the brain and ageing, blurting out a remark without thinking isn’t necessarily something to be alarmed about. And if you’re on the receiving end, try not to take it too personally. If these remarks seem out of character or extreme, however, consider raising this with other family members or a doctor.“Filters” are an important part of our everyday social interactions. A brief Monday morning chat with your boss is more complex than it may seem. For example, you might stop yourself from telling them they smell awful after their morning bike ride into the office and should’ve showered before your meeting. You might consider telling them about the fungal infection you discovered on your toenail over the weekend but decide against it. Of course, what you do or do not say also depends on how well you know them and what’s considered socially acceptable in your workplace.
Perhaps we learn to let go of our “filters” and embrace the social awkwardness as we get older. Perhaps grandpa really didn’t like your cooking, and feels secure enough to tell you.
For example, older adults have more difficulty recognising when someone’s said something embarrassing or tactless, and show poorer understanding of sarcasm.Aside from changes in the brain that impact inhibitory control and social cognition, it could simply be that as we get older, we care less about what others think. Compared to younger adults, older adults are less self-conscious, reporting fewer experiences of emotions such as shame, guilt, and embarrassment. They also have higher overall levels of happiness and life satisfaction. When someone has no “filter”, it means they say things without thinking about their audience. They may blurt out something rude, inappropriate, or unkind, without considering the likely consequences.Researchers have linked age-related shrinking in the frontal lobes with declines in inhibitory control and social cognition. Studies have also found older adults respond differently to socially awkward situations than younger adults.
As we get older, our brains start to shrink. This is a normal part of the ageing process known as brain atrophy. It affects how well our brain cells can communicate with one another. Importantly, brain atrophy doesn’t happen to all areas of the brain at once. It is particularly noticeable in the frontal lobes.
What is a self love quote?
“If you don’t love yourself, nobody will. Not only that, you won’t be good at loving anyone else. Loving starts with the self.”
In some rare cases, losing your “filter” can be a sign of something more serious, such as damage to the frontal lobes due to a brain injury or stroke, or a neurodegenerative condition such as frontotemporal dementia.People with frontotemporal dementia present with striking changes in their personality and social behaviour. This could involve losing their normal inhibitions, disregarding social conventions and other socially inappropriate or embarrassing behaviour.
Your “filter” relies on cognitive processes such as inhibitory control, which stops you from saying the first thing that pops into your mind. It also relies on social cognition, which refers to the ability to understand and predict other people’s behaviours, thoughts, and intentions. This helps us to recognise what behaviour is appropriate in a particular social setting and to adapt our behaviour based on this.
The prefrontal cortex, which is located within the frontal lobes of our brains, acts as our “filter”, helping us say and do things in a socially appropriate way. When this part of the brain isn’t functioning properly, we might act as though we’ve lost our “filter”.Hannah Keage does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.
However, these changes are completely out of character and are typically accompanied by other symptoms such as rigidity, loss of empathy, apathy, difficulties with reasoning and judgement, overeating or unusual food preferences and declines in self-care and personal hygiene.

But what causes some people to be able to control their emotions and their tongue during stressful or contentious conversations, and others just seem to say what’s on their mind openly, and without a filter? I’m not talking about a person who has the confidence to share their opinion or voice their concerns openly in a constructive way. That isn’t what this is about. I am talking about the person who mumbles under their breath, blurts out negative responses to a conversation or says things that are totally inappropriate for the moment. Or, sometimes it’s the person who just Can’t. Stop. Talking.
I have had a co-worker for over 12 years that this behavior was allowed to interrupt our environment. Our work locations and management have changed 3 times in past 18 months. I know her on a personal level, and as a friend I’m exhausted. She advertises herself on social media thinking this is normal behavior. No one can reach her. She is proud of her no filter, but she is slowly descending into unsafe ways that could bring her violence or death. She changed for a nano second. She truly believes the right man will make her world perfect…so she will not stop in spite of children, grandchildren, faith or friends. What do we do?How about when the circumstances, behaviors and thoughts are influenced by the company or surroundings that there in. An individual can only do so much filtering till the meaning is loss due to mispercieved body language, cultural, psychological, or social and behavioral norms. Sometimes, we just see something that is there or not depending upon the context and content of the conversation. Or the meaning and understanding that we put in our lives. So what exactly are you asking to filter while being aware of the situation but at the same time considerate and compassionate and empathetic towards your boss or coworkers or any interpersonal relationships. Please enlighten me! Thanks!
I once had an employee who was badgering the rest of the team members, unbeknownst to me. She was doing this when I wasn’t around, and had become abrasive, abusive and downright rude. Other things had happened as well such as degrading comments out loud with the team, and even making comments about other team members in front of customers. It was a bad situation. Once the behavior came to light, and I began to talk to other team members to get a feel for the behavior, they consistently said that they didn’t say anything because ‘it’s just the way she was’, and figured it would never change.
But, lacking a filter is really something different. When someone ‘lacks a filter’, it means that they don’t give consideration to the audience, and often end up saying things that are rude, condescending, or downright mean. Telling someone they are an idiot during a meeting, making a crass comment about another person’s mis-fortune, or cracking an inappropriate joke out loud could all fall into this category.
The Gallup organization, a national workplace research firm, has a question on their Employee Engagement Survey that asks whether the employee has a best friend at work. The purpose behind this question gets to the same issue. Those employees who have a friend at work, someone they can count on and talk to, are more productive and happier. This happiness directly impacts their overall engagement, and affects everything from turnover to the organizations perception in the community. No filter Fred is hurting your organization much more than you realize.
We all have those moments though. We let our emotions, thoughts and frustrations take control of our mouths and we end up saying things we wish we hadn’t. But as a leader, it’s important that you realize the impact your words, even unintentional, can have on your team and credibility. Even in this age of ‘saying it like it is’, as a leader you really don’t have that luxury if you intend to maintain your influence on the team or organization.
People who lack a filter often aren’t aware that they lack it. They have likely been told before, and might even make light of the trait, but ultimately, they don’t make any changes because they don’t really see it as an issue. They quickly defend themselves and say that this is ‘just who they are’ or ‘how they were raised.’ I once worked with someone who lacked a filter, and while it was discussed several times, he insisted he was from Chicago, and ‘that’s just how we are.’ Strangely, I’ve worked with many other people from Chicago, and they didn’t act like this person, so I suspect he was just making an excuse, or I misunderstood which Chicago he was from!
What does no filter needed mean on Instagram?
#NoFilter is a hashtag used on social media to indicate that no social media filter has been used. It is commonly used on Instagram.
Not long ago, I was sitting in a discussion where the topic was fairly controversial and the opinions of the group seemed to vary pretty dramatically. In fact, it really seemed as if there were becoming two ‘camps’ on the topic, and the camps were pretty far apart. During the conversation, someone behind me mumbled to themselves out loud a disparaging remark about a comment the other side was making. It struck me that the person really needed to turn on their filter, and likely didn’t realize what they were doing. In fact, this is one of those times where I wanted to turn around and ask them if they knew they just said it out loud! So, what can you do when you have a ’no filter Fred’ on the team? The list below is an escalating set of steps you can follow to help change the behavior, and restore sanity to the team.
Karen Bieker, it does sound like a real challenge. In this case, you are both personal friends as well as co-workers, so your lines can blur a little. In this particular case, have you talked to her from the co-worker perspective? That can be harder as fiends, but perhaps talking with her and telling her up front that you are coming to her as someone who has to work with her, she might be a bit more receptive. While I don’t know the whole situation, it does sound like she’s being ‘encouraged’ to be more outspoken, but might not realize that it’s impacting her relationships. As I said in the article, this might be a time to put it in writing so she has a chance to think on what you say, reflect on it, and maybe rethink her approach. I hope this goes well.
In any of the cases above, if you DO see improvements, or them trying hard to make changes, be sure to thank them and encourage them immediately. This isn’t going to be easy for them, and you want to reinforce the good behaviors and expectations you have for them early and often. Hopefully this reinforcement will serve to let them know that change is possible, and better teamwork is ahead. But it doesn’t always work out like we want. The term ‘without a filter’ is a pretty common one used today to describe a person who speaks without tact, seems to blurt out their thoughts or is generally seen as very blunt. The phrase comes from the idea that your mouth says what your brain thinks without consideration to the audience, situation or time. But, being frank or blunt does not mean you lack a filter. In fact, depending on the culture of where you are, or where you’re from, it might actually be normal or considered necessary.
What are the risks of you not addressing the ‘no filter Fred’ on your team? Is it possible that this truly is ‘just the way he is’, and the rest of the team members aren’t as bothered by it as much as you are? Doubtful.
As a leader, having the ‘no filter Fred’ on your team can be a real problem. Since they lack judgement on what to say, and when to say it, they end up creating hard feelings with the team, alienate customers, and generally run roughshod over the organization. No matter what people say, they just don’t add value to the team, and create a difficult workplace for everyone.
As a leader, you can’t let no filter Fred continue his reign of destruction. You team is counting on you, and the organization is being negatively impacted the longer you let him continue. Set your mind to do something about it, and do it soon. Your success may depend on it.But what the team didn’t realize was, her behavior was impacting all of them more negatively than they thought. In fact, according to a two decade study by TelAviv University, one of the biggest predictors of an employee’s health was their coworkers. According to their research, employees who had no peer social support (remember, no filter Fred is NOT supportive) were 2.4 times more likely to die than those who had a supportive work team.LinkedIn and 3rd parties use essential and non-essential cookies to provide, secure, analyze and improve our Services, and to show you relevant ads (including professional and job ads) on and off LinkedIn. Any suggestions on how to restore good communication and trust with each other in the family circle? I was extremely pleased with the customer service that I received. I had purchased the wrong size filter and you guys went above and beyond in order to get me the right ones. You’ve got a customer for years to come. Can you run an AC without an air filter? Yes. However, you need to know what happens if you don’t have an air filter in your AC. Anytime you run your AC without using a filter, you are taking a serious risk with your AC’s health which could lead to needing repairs or a replacement. The following are all potential negative implications of running AC/HVAC systems without a filter:
Air conditioners cool air by blowing it across tubes filled with the cooling agent Freon. These Freon Tubes are essential to the function of the AC and when blocked or covered in debris are unable to work correctly. As stated above, when the condensation drain is blocked and water instead coats the Freon tubes, debris and dirt can stick to the tubes and prevent proper function.
A credit in the amount of your air filter purchase up to $30 will be applied to your dryer vent cleaning invoice. Available to Southeast Florida residents only. With that said, one to two days of running without a filter may not result in damage depending on the current air quality and environment. Again, running your AC without a filter for any amount of time is ALWAYS a risk to the system. When considering this risk, some environmental factors should be considered which may change the amount of time the system can go without damage.
Is having no filter good or bad?
When someone ‘lacks a filter’, it means that they don’t give consideration to the audience, and often end up saying things that are rude, condescending, or downright mean.
Running your AC for any time without an air filter is not recommended due to the permanent damage it can cause to the HVAC system. Dirt and dust that is normally absorbed by the filter can make its way into the AC system and wreak havoc on the mechanical components, often leading to expensive repairs. We highly recommend replacing your air filter as quickly as possible. To optimally serve this purpose, most filters are made with a unique material like fiberglass or special cloth that will trap particles in the air within it. Air filters are rated on the level of filtration of the particulates in the air, commonly using the MERV rating system or other equivalent systems like MPR and FPR. Depending on the air quality and the environment that the air filter is used in, different levels of filtration may be required to optimally protect air conditioners from damage.
Since air filters normally trap dirt, dust, hair, and other contaminants, running your AC without a filter will lead to the recirculation of debris throughout the house. This contributes to generally poor indoor air quality and can aggravate allergies or affect the health of you and your family. For households with pets or buildings that house animals, there will obviously be an increased presence of animal dander in the air. While air filters are generally good at filtering out this dander, running your AC without a filter poses an additional risk of harm to the mechanical components of your HVAC system and to the health of your pets.Dirty or broken air filters have lessened abilities to filter out contaminants from the air. Dirty filters specifically have less surface area to absorb debris and thus will not function as well as a clean filter. Broken or torn filters could allow debris or contaminants to pass into the air conditioner and cause damage to the machine. It is best to get a replacement filter as fast as possible to minimize the risks to your health or to your air conditioner.
Now that you understand the different types of damage that can occur, hopefully you see the importance of proper air filter use. If your current air filter is broken or dirty, is crucial to get a replacement air filter as fast as possible.
Another effect of running your AC without a filter is the clogging of the condensate drain, which serves to remove extra liquid accumulated during the dehumidifying process. The extra dirt and debris that pass into the AC system due to the lack of an air filter can make its way into the condensation drain (where it isn’t supposed to be) and clog the drain. As the drain becomes more and more clogged, condensation will instead accumulate on the Freon tubing and cause water damage.Generally, poor air quality from pollution, excess dirt, or mold can also lead to damage faster for HVAC systems. It is important to at least consider the quality of air in your home, apartment, or building before risking the long-term health of your AC by running it without a filter. Indoor air quality testing is available and can help you better understand your particular situation.
No, running your AC without a filter is not recommended and is generally dangerous to the health of your air conditioner. Any amount of time that an air conditioner is run without a filter could cause damage to the system and shorten its life span. It is best to get a replacement filter as fast as possible.
As a general rule, it is never a good idea to run your air conditioner or HVAC system without an air filter in place. Any amount of time spent doing so can lead to permanent damage and the possibility of needing expensive repairs.
What caption for a selfie?
Cute Selfie Captions“If you were looking for a sign, here it is.”“Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.”“Just because you’re awake doesn’t mean you should stop dreaming.”“Be yourself, there’s no one better.”“Stress less and enjoy the best.”“Look for the magic in every moment.”
Although most residential air filters have a MERV rating only between 1 to 4, these are not typically enough to filter out smaller particles. Filterbuy exclusively sells higher rated air filters too ensure that small contaminants like mold, pet dander, and aerosol do not pass through. There is no standard rating for normal air quality, since there are many factors to consider like household environment, the health needs of inhabitants, and budget. For houses or buildings with a larger amount of dust inside, there is an increased risk of damage to systems that aren’t using an air filter. Without the filter to capture this excess dust, it can travel directly into the system and wreak havoc on the main mechanical components.
Although there are specific situations when this may be acceptable for a very short time, in most situations running your AC without a filter could be disastrous. Generally, anytime you run your air conditioning system without an air filter you are taking a major risk. To save you from any potentially permanent damage, we will dive into the deeper concepts and implications of running your AC without a filter.
Dirt is the number one cause of air conditioners breaking down, so running your unit without an installed air filters can cause serious damage. Aside from dirt though, there are many kinds of air particulates that can lead to damage. Contaminants in the air that could also harm an air conditioner include:The broader purpose of your air filter is to clean your home’s air and to keep your AC system dust- and dirt-free. Since dirt, dust, dander, and other particulates in the air can cause damage to an air conditioner, air filters are needed to act as a barrier for the AC.
Is it okay to not have a filter?
Since air filters normally trap dirt, dust, hair, and other contaminants, running your AC without a filter will lead to the recirculation of debris throughout the house. This contributes to generally poor indoor air quality and can aggravate allergies or affect the health of you and your family.
Very easy and convenient. FilterBuy even had filter sizes for my furnace unit that I couldn’t find anywhere else. Prices are comparable to what I’d pay for the same filter at the store. With free shipping at my own custom interval, this is really unbeatable. I highly recommend for any homeowner. If construction is taking place in your area, chances are that the dust and debris in your air may be higher than usual. Construction can stir up contaminants in the air and reduce the overall air quality, both indoors and outdoors. An increase in the circulation of particulates in the area could mean quicker damage to your AC when running without a filter.
