Kĩ năng nghe đã từng là kĩ năng mình sợ nhất, nhưng khi nghe nhiều, mình cảm thấy hóa ra đó lại là kĩ năng mạnh nhất của mình. Tất cả là sự luyện tập. Bạn càng nghe nhiều thì sẽ nghe càng tốt. – Khi mới học về note-taking, mình nghĩ rằng đây là cách để mình đọc lại note của mình sau khi nghe xong, để xem lại các ý chính và ý phụ của toàn bài. Đây cũng là một phần mục tiêu của note-taking. Tuy nhiên, sau này, làm bài thi TOEFL iBT, mình hiểu rằng, đọc lại notes của mình sau khi nghe bài toefl là HOÀN TOÀN VÔ NGHĨA. Bài thi TOEFL buộc bạn phải trả lời câu hỏi dưới một áp lực khủng khiếp về thời gian, cho nên việc đọc lại notes để tìm ý trả lời là hoàn toàn vô dụng.Thời xa xưa, trước khi nghe bất kì cái gì, mình cắm đầu vào đọc câu hỏi, đọc để đoán trước nội dung. Cô giáo hồi đại học dạy mình cũng bảo thế, đọc trước các câu hỏi rồi đoán nội dung, khi nghe cứ tập trung vào nghe mấy chỗ đó. Như vậy, trước khi nghe, đã biết sơ lược về những gì sẽ được nói đến trong bài nghe rồi.Trang này có lợi thế là bạn có thể chọn chất giọng (nam/nữ, các accent khác nhau) + tốc độ đọc (nhanh/chậm tùy ý). Khi nghe mẫu đọc, cố gắng phân tích và cảm nhận cách họ đọc từ, nhấn trọng âm và nhấn các từ quan trọng trong câu. In phần text của bài ra, gạch xanh đỏ và viết ra phiên âm theo mình là cách học hiệu quả.
Sau buổi đầu về, mình nghĩ khá nhiều. Nếu quyết định đi học, nghĩa là phải đóng tiền cả tháng (học phí không rẻ nhé, mà nhà lại nghèo). Thế mà cuối cùng mình quyết định đi tiếp. Vì mình nghĩ, bạn mình học được, chẳng có lý do gì mình không làm được và mình tin mình sẽ làm được.Đặt mục tiêu: Mỗi bài bạn chọn không cần quá dài, hãy chọn bài đọc chậm, đơn giản, dễ đọc trước. Sau đó, nâng dần tốc độ của bài cũng như độ dài của bài.
Như vậy, shadowing thực sự chưa hẳn đã là công thức phù hợp cho người mới bắt đầu. Bạn có thể chọn bài đọc chậm (trong các giáo trình tiếng Anh) và tỉ mẩn nghe, gạch chân những chỗ người ta nhấn dể bắt chước theo từng cụm từ, trước khi đọc đuổi theo họ. Để làm được điều này, tốt nhất bạn nên có chút căn bản kiến thức về phát âm tiếng Anh.
Nhiều bạn muốn Moon chia sẻ kinh nghiệm luyện nói từ lâu rồi. Moon là một người tự học tiếng Anh, nên sẵn lòng chia sẻ với các bạn những bài học xương máu của mình. Để nói tiếng Anh tốt, tự tin, lưu loát, các bạn nhất thiết phải biết tới ba bí mật này.– Thứ nhất là đừng có mở từ điển ra, tra một từ xong rồi tra đầy đủ các nghĩa của nó, rồi các dạng động từ, tính từ danh từ nhé. Ngày trước mình hay làm thế, giờ thấy rằng việc học từ kiểu đó rất là ngớ ngẩn mất thời gian và không hiệu quả. Chỉ cần biết nghĩa của từ mới đó trong bối cảnh bài nghe là quá ổn rồi. + Moon thường dành thời gian (chừng 15-20 phút mỗi ngày) để học theo một chương trình nào đó. Moon đã học hết hơn chục khóa trên cousera, về nhiều chủ đề khác nhau như chăm sóc sức khỏe, branding, content Marketing. Mỗi khóa có nhiều module, mỗi sáng thường mình chỉ dành thời gian xem 1-2 videos, ghi chép lại ý chính của mỗi bài, coi như là đi học & giữ tinh thần mình mới mẻ. Cứ thế dần dà, mình khá hơn. Điều quan trọng là mình tự thừa nhận với chị chuyên gia là, mình dốt, mình kém, mình nghe hiểu lõm bõm lắm, nhưng mình vẫn cố gắng. Thôi thì chị cố gắng giúp em, cho em nói chuyện với chị nhiều hơn tí. Và rồi đâu cũng vào đấy, mình đảm nhiệm tốt công việc của mình và việc huấn luyện chuyên gia cứ chạy veo veo.Mình giải thích dễ hiểu: note-taking là cách các bạn note ý chính ý phụ khi nghe (giống như khi nghe thầy cô giảng bài bằng tiếng Việt, học sinh ở dưới ghi chép vậy). Nhưng có điểm hơi khác biệt, là phần lớn thời gian, học sinh Việt Nam sẽ ghi chép “nguyên si” lời thầy cô với tốc độ viết khủng khiếp là nhanh (chả là ngày xưa hồi còn mài đũng quần trên ghế giảng đường, mình cũng hay làm trò này, mà mình toàn là chép nhanh nhất nên hay được các bạn mượn vở chép. Xong này mới thấy làm như vầy thật là “hại cái não”).Thứ nhất, bạn luyện nghe mỗi ngày. Khi nghe, đương nhiên bạn sẽ thấy quen tai với nhịp nói của người bản xứ, nghe nhiều bạn sẽ cảm nhận được nhịp điệu của họ để bắt chước cho giống. Đồng thời, nếu chú tâm, bạn sẽ học được từ vựng, cách diễn đạt tự nhiên của họ.Nói đùa vậy thôi, chứ bản chất mình là một đứa khó bị khuất phục. Mình quyết định ở lại, vì mình biết nếu ở lại thì cái trình tiếng Anh lẹt đẹt của mình mới có ngày khấm khá hơn. Rồi mình lê la đến nói chuyện với chị chuyên gia trong giờ nghỉ, yêu cầu gặp trước buổi dịch workshop để làm việc trước về từ vựng, về nội dung. Vượt qua sự xấu hổ (hơi mặt trơ trán bóng), mình cứ tiếp tục làm.
– Thứ ba, mình “dục tốc” quá nên bất đạt. Ngày đấy chả hiểu mình ngu si thế nào mà lại nghĩ là nếu tập trung nghe thì có khi một tháng sau nghe trình headway từ a lên được bằng c luôn. Ngẫm lại thấy đó chính là chiến lược sai lầm. Muốn biết ngựa tốt phải cho chạy đường dài, muốn giỏi thì phải nhẫn nại. Không có phương pháp thần thánh nào để nắm bí kíp, hay học thần tốc, rồi sẽ giỏi ngay. Học cái gì cũng vậy, phải có thời gian thực hành, để ngấm. Vấn đề ngày trước của mình là “thích ăn sổi”, thích đánh nhanh thắng nhanh, đó chính là nguyên nhân to nhất dẫn tới bỏ cuộc giữa chừng.
Hãy nhớ là, không có thành công nào không có mồ hôi nước mắt. Nếu bạn chỉ thấy một ai đó giỏi tiếng Anh, thì cũng không nên nghĩ rằng họ giỏi tự nhiên. Đằng sau đó, có thể là hàng giờ ngồi nghe mỗi ngày mà bạn không biết đấy thôi!Chắc hẳn đâu đó bạn đã từng nghe thấy người ta nói tới kỹ thuật này. Về cơ bản, shadowing là việc bạn bật bài mẫu lên và nói theo họ. Tuy nhiên, có hai vấn đề mà người mới tập gặp phải khi shadow, đó là gì?– Thứ hai là, đừng dùng từ điển Anh – Việt mà hãy dùng từ điển Anh – Anh ngay từ hôm nay. Ngày trước mình xài từ điển Lạc Việt với V-dict để học từ mới, thấy vốn từ lên rất chậm, học trước quên sau. Từ ngày chuyển qua mấy cái từ điển Anh – Anh như Dictionary.com hoặc Oxford Dictionary hoặc the free dictionary, thấy vốn từ tăng lên hẳn. Tại sao? Vì mỗi lần tra một từ nào đó là nó giải thích bằng một câu toàn các từ mới khác. Thế nên, để hiểu được nghĩa từ đó, mình bắt buộc phải tra thêm nghĩa của một số từ khác. Vòng vèo một hồi, học kiểu này, biết một từ và còn học luôn mấy từ đồng nghĩa với nó nữa.Chiến thuật này mình dùng từ cách đây hơn chục năm rồi. Mình nhận ra rằng khi không có nhiều điều kiện giao tiếp với người bản xứ, việc nói về bất kỳ chủ đề gì rồi ghi âm là cực kỳ hữu hiệu trong quá trình tự học. Nếu bạn nói rằng, ghi âm không ai chữa bài cho thì hãy thay đổi ngay lập tức cách suy nghĩ này. Việc thực hành là do tự thân, bạn phải biết cách tự nghe và sửa lỗi. Làm nhiều thì sẽ quen. Ngày trước mình tập cũng thèm có người sửa cho lắm nhưng làm gì có ai, cho nên mình chỉ đặt mục tiêu là nói mỗi ngày để tạo phản xạ đã. Sau đó, mình cố gắng nghe lại bản ghi của mình để xem mình đã nói dễ hiểu hay lưu loát hay chưa.
Trước khi nghe, hãy đặt mục tiêu. Ví dụ, đặt mục tiêu sau 1 lần nghe liên tục, bạn sẽ nắm vững ý chính ý phụ toàn bài. Cái mục tiêu này còn tùy thuộc vào mức độ khó dễ của bài nghe.
+ Thời gian nghỉ trưa, mình thường biến thành một “couch potato”. Lúc nãy, mình sẽ bật tivi, chọn 1 TV show của Mỹ mà mình thích, và xem 1 tập (chừng 30-40 phút). Hiện mình đang xem bộ “ Gilmore girls” về tình cảm bà mẹ đơn thân và cô con gái, phim trong sáng, xem được, nói tiếng Anh cảm giác nhanh hơn phim “How I met your mother”.
Ví dụ, bài đó họ bảo là về cuộc hội thoại giữa hai vợ chồng, mình phải ngồi tưởng tượng trước xem có thể họ sẽ nói về cái gì nhể, chắc nói về kì nghỉ gì đó, hay là cãi nhau về vấn đề tài chính, hoặc là lên kế hoạch sinh con. Sau khi lên dây cót, bạn hãy nghe để kiểm nghiệm xem những gì mình nghe được trong bài có đúng như những gì mình dự đoán từ trước hay không nhé.
Ở bước này, bạn đừng quên tự ghi âm và nghe lại. Ghi âm nhiều lần, tự nghe và tự đánh giá xem mình đã nhấn trọng âm đúng chưa, đã nhấn đúng từ mà mẫu nhấn hay chưa.Thường cái hứng đó chỉ xuất hiện vào những ngày khởi đầu cái gì đó, ví dụ như khởi đầu năm học mới, sau nghỉ Tết…cảm thấy có hứng làm lại từ đầu. Nhưng ôi chao, thường thì cái cảm hứng đó ra đi rất là nhanh, rồi mình lại trở về những tháng ngày ngập ngụa trong việc ăn chơi, cảm thấy việc học tiếng Anh thật khó và chả đi về đâu cả. Hãy chọn một bài đọc ngắn ở bất kỳ quyển giáo trình tiếng Anh nào, ở tốc độ chậm. Khi bắt đầu, bạn có thể chỉ chọn 3-5 câu là đủ. Sau đó, bạn hãy thử nghe người ta nói (kèm nhìn transcript). Cũng như trong ví dụ vừa đề cập ở trên, note từ khóa “ngủ muộn – da xấu” thay vì nắn nót ghi cả câu “nếu ngủ muộn, da mặt bạn xấu hơn”. Vì sao? Khi note, bạn không có nhiều thời gian để chau truốt, càng ít từ càng tốt.Khi đã có transcript bài nghe, việc bạn bỏ thời gian đọc lại bài đó theo bài nghe mẫu là một cách tuyệt hảo để luyện cách phát âm, cách nối âm, giai điệu và ngữ điệu của bài.
