There are some advantages to growing from seeds, though. New hybrids are produced from seeds. Other methods only produce clones of the mother plant. The process can be extremely rewarding even though it takes a long time.Some orchids produce keikis (baby orchid shoots that develop roots and a stem). These keikis can be removed from the mother plant and placed in their own containers. A keiki usually develops into a mature plant within two years.

In the wild, orchids typically live in tropical environments, but this does not mean that orchids will die if you miss watering them occasionally. Orchids can go two or three weeks without being watered. Orchids do not thrive under these conditions, but they can survive.If you want blooms during a particular season, look for orchid varieties that bloom during that time. The flowers have 5 spreading petals and are delightfully fragrant. It has a rounded, spreading form, leaning or crooked trunk and arching, cascading branches with large, 2-lobed leaves. It flowers in the spring after it drops its leaves and it also has flowers on leafy branches throughout the year. This spectacular display makes orchid-tree a favorite for specimen and street-tree plantings. It is easy to grow and likes well-drained soil and full sun. Orchids don’t grow in trees, but this lovely Bauhinia could convince you otherwise. In spring, it covers itself with a profusion of fragrant white blossoms 5″ across. Serious showstopper. It grows quickly to 15′ or 20′ with a short trunk and spreading branches, not too big for a backyard but showy enough for a botanic garden.Orchid Tree can also be grown indoors in bright light and kept small with pruning. Older seeds should be soaked in hot water, then planted in moist sandy soil and kept warm. These seeds are so fresh that they’re sprouting without encouragement. Easy.

Orchid bloom times can be quite variable depending on the growing environment and the hybridization of the plant. For example, the hybrid Doritaenopsis, a cross between Doritis and Phalaenopsis, blends the summer bloom time of the Doritis parent with the larger blooms of the Phalaenopsis parent creating nice hybrids that look much like a Phal but bloom longer into the summer. Also, some orchids can be forced into bloom by altering the temperatures. For example, Phalaenopsis growers may chill the growing area to trick the plants into thinking it is Fall and setting a bloom spike accordingly. As a result, a plant that is in bloom when purchased is likely to adapt to its environment and set its own bloom cycle based upon its new home. As an example, a plant that is in bloom when purchased in the fall may bloom every winter after that in its new environment.No pests or diseases are of major concern. Potassium, magnesium, and micronutrient deficiencies are common. Orchid-tree seeds itself into the landscape.Growing in full sun or high, shifting pine shade, orchid-tree thrives in any well-drained soil but in alkaline soils will show interveinal chlorosis (yellowing) on the leaves. Potassium deficiency shows up as necrosis, magnesium deficiency as chlorosis. Although tolerant of drought, white orchid-tree can benefit from some afternoon shade, or irrigation, in hot, dry weather to prevent the blooms from shrivelling up. The flowers are followed by many brown, woody seed pods which fill the tree and could be considered unattractive on the tree in the winter and a nuisance when they drop.

Orchid-tree benefits from some pruning early in their life to increase branchiness and to produce a form which will be suited for most landscapes. Left unpruned, many trees are beautiful, forming multiple trunks and branches close to the ground which is fine for specimen use in a lawn area or other open-space landscapes. Purchase trees with one trunk for parking lot or other urban landscapes where vehicular clearance will be necessary. Be sure to train branches so they will grow up before they spread out. If this is not done, lower branches will droop toward the ground and they may have to be removed, disfiguring the tree. Orchid trees drop fruit, small branches and leaves periodically so some people consider it a messy tree. But regularly fertilized, orchid-tree is a wonderful flowering tree.One of the hardiest of the bauhinias, white orchid-tree is a deciduous to semi-evergreen tree reaching 25 to 30 feet in height with interesting twisted ascending branches which droop at the ends, an often-leaning trunk, and large, bilobed, dark green leaves. Probably too messy and sensitive to alkaline soil for a residential or downtown street tree but would grow well and be suited for a median strip where the debris would be washed away and less noticeable. Growth in alkaline soil is usually fine, but the leaves appear yellow between the veins.

This deciduous to semievergreen tree has a vase-shaped, open canopy with lower branches removed made up of large, bilobed, light green, papery leaves. Unpruned trees form a rounded crown. The orchid-like blooms, in shades of purple, red, pink, white, or yellow, are three to four inches across and produced in abundance at various times of the year, depending upon species. Orchid tree makes a spectacular specimen or shade tree or fits well into mixed shrubbery borders.Many species, cultivars, and varieties are available. Bauhinia blakeana, the Hong Kong orchid tree, is seedless and would not present such a litter problem. It is also the most spectacular and most wanted Bauhinia spp., bearing six-inch, orchid-like flowers of rich reddish or rose purple during the winter but is very tender to freezing temperatures. Bauhinia variegata, most popular, produces in winter and spring most nearly orchid-like blossoms of purplish casts or pure white in cultivar ‘Candida’. Bauhinia purpurea, most variable, produces narrow-petaled, red-purple to blue-purple flowers in late fall and early winter while leaves are on the trees. Bauhinia monandra produces pink, single-stamened flowers all summer. Bauhinia acuminata also blooms all summer but with white flowers. Bauhinia aculeata, with white flowers, is hardy as far north as hardiness USDA hardiness zone 8b but has a tendency to produce many root suckers.

Prized for its orchid-like flowers, Bauhinia variegata (Orchid Tree) is a small semi-evergreen to deciduous shrub or tree with a spreading canopy of light green leaves, 6-8 in. long (15-20 cm), deeply cleft at the apex and base, and resembling butterfly wings. Blooming profusely from late winter to early spring, ravishing orchid-like, bright pink, purple and white flowers, 2-3 in. across (5-7 cm), shine against the foliage and attract hummingbirds. Showy, they are borne in small clusters near the stem tips and feature five unequal petals, each narrowed to a claw. They are followed by flat, sharp-beaked pods, 12 in. long (30 cm). The foliage may drop in fall or persist into winter.
