Scag Power Equipment, a division of Metalcraft of Mayville, Inc., was founded in 1983. Originally, the Scag® product was manufactured under contract with Metalcraft of Mayville in Mayville, Wisconsin. In 1986, Metalcraft purchased Scag Power Equipment, marking the beginning of a tremendous period of growth for the company.
From just one model, a gear-drive rider, to over 50 models today, Scag Power Equipment has become one of the largest independent manufacturers of commercial & residential mowing equipment and debris/turf management equipment in the world. Scag Power Equipment’s innovation and attention to quality is known and respected throughout the power equipment industry. Mowers and accessories are designed to be user-friendly, with an emphasis on quality, performance, ease of maintenance, profitability and long life.Every mower starts off as sheet steel or tube steel. We punch, press, bend, cut, weld, paint, assemble, package and ship our mowers, and we do it all in our three factories in Mayville, West Bend and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Scag makes Scag mowers; nobody else makes them for us… and we do not make mowers for other companies.

We also use test facilities in various locations across North America in various climates and grass types.

Scag mowers are assembled by highly trained individuals using the latest technologies. Each mower is run at the end of the assembly line to ensure that the following items are up to specification: engine RPM is set, all safety switches are checked for proper operation, fluids are filled, systems are checked for leaks, and neutral and tracking adjustments are set using special dynamometers that apply load to the drive system. These steps add to the value of every Scag mower and ensure the product is the best it can be when it leaves our factory.

Scag Power Equipment is one of the last commercial power-equipment companies that actually manufactures their own components. Other mower “manufacturers” are simply assemblers, bolting together parts that other companies have made for them. In fact, every “Scag Gold” component on our mowers is manufactured from scratch by Scag (except for the wheels and ROPS). Sheet metal and tube steel comes in one end of the factory and the world’s best commercial lawn mowers go out the other end. Manufacturing our own component parts allows us greater flexibility in design and more control over the quality of the parts we use in our mowers. Ultimately, we control our own destiny and are able to react quickly with new designs and product enhancements.PRESS RELEASE: JCM Racing Teams Up with Tim Wilkerson Racing to Form Maynard Wilkerson Racing Funny Car Team, Expands Partnership with SCAG Power Equipment Scag products are fabricated at our parent company, Metalcraft of Mayville, Inc., one of the largest independently owned manufacturers of commercial and residential power equipment in North America. ROPS are over rated in my book due to the fact they do look cool, and if you need roll over protection is a must have. But in my case ROPS would just be in the way getting hung up on every tree I own. I don’t have ant roll over situations on my place. Nor do I plan to ever be in a roll over situation.Houzz nutzt Cookies und ähnliche Technologien, um Ihre Benutzererfahrung zu personalisieren, Ihnen relevante Inhalte bereitzustellen und die Produkte und Dienstleistungen zu verbessern. Heck! What do I know??? I didn’t buy either one of them. I bought a Bad Boy Pup instead. I’ve never met a mower I couldn’t like, as long as it was mowing!!
Scag has a lot of points about things not needing maintenance (grasse) etc, anyone see any benefits here? or is it so simplistic John Deere doesnt say anything about it?Looks to me like most all the other important items are pretty much the same between the two, even deck steel gauge and deck lift/adjustment system. Which surprises me because I would have thought the Scag would have a heavier fabricated deck for that price. Maybe someone else can shed some light on differences.

I haven’t read many reports about the Scag transaxles being a bad choice. As far a sealed bearings, I like them. I feel like the Scag spindles might be stronger and easier to maintenance. Just take the center bolt out, push out the bearings, push new ones in. That’s how just about all commercial mowers are now days. Fast, cheap, and easy to repair and replace. I don’t think either mower have very many grease points if any.
So the pump difference is better because its not integrated on John Deere…. Is this for future replacement purposes better or just a better setup in general?

You need to go look at them. Sit on em. Look all around them, and underneath them. Get the dealer to let you drive each one around on grass mowing. One has to catch your eye more some than the other.I was there once looking at both mowers a year ago. I like them both then. I think the Scag will cost more out the door. But I think it’ll cost more maintaining the Deere.

Hello, Im looking at purchasing a new zero turn mower. I have it narrowed down to Scag Freedom Z 52″ deck with 26 hp Briggs vs John Deere EZtrak Z445 54″ with 25hp Kawasaki. Does anyone have any expierience as to why one maybe a better purchase than the other? perhaps something technical that makes one stand out above the other?

Bulk paint is currently not available.
Most Scag owner’s manuals also contain an illustrated parts list. Please contact your Scag dealer for assistance in determining and ordering the correct parts.

Due to the wide variety of turf conditions (loose, hard-packed, wet, dry, loamy, etc.), we recommend first trying to back up the incline in question with the cutter deck down. If you are able to back up the incline without tire spin, you should be able to proceed in mowing it, with caution of course. If at all in doubt of a particular incline, it is best to not attempt to mow it. Caution must be used when traveling on slopes, especially when the grass is wet. Do not mow on wet grass. Wet grass reduces traction and steering control.
At Scag, we strive to provide our current and potential customers with the most complete and useful information possible. Below are various questions we receive on a regular basis. Browse through the following categories of questions and click on a question to find the answer. There is a threaded plug in the casters to prevent over-greasing. The hole is threaded so a grease fitting can be installed when needed. Grease fittings were installed in 1997/98 when the Turf Tiger™ was released and the tendency was a lot of over-greasing of the bearing set and popping the caps off. The bearing set that is in the pivot is a matched, tapered roller bearing set just like the cutter spindles. Due to the application (limited rotation), the bearing set in the pivot only needs to be greased once a year or every 500 hours (whichever comes first) so the grease fitting was removed and replaced with the plug. This helps prevent over-greasing the pivot, popping the cap off or damaging the seal. Furthermore, if the cap is popped off due to over-greasing and not reinstalled, the pivot tube now becomes a rain gauge exposing the bearings to contamination (water, debris, etc.). The major benefit of an air-cooled engine is that they are simpler in design as they have fewer parts involved. Because of this, they are less expensive in price and potential repair cost. We recommend consulting with your local Scag dealer if you need assistance in deciding between these two types of engines. The dealer will be able to share with you their knowledge and experience to help you make an informed decision.Occasionally customers inquire about switching the hydro oil in their new Scag to synthetic. While there is nothing in the drive system that could be damaged from its use, as outlined above, it is certainly not necessary. We do suggest that they wait until after the initial break-in period before making the switch, if desired. One important consideration is mower-deck size. Bigger is not always better. If you are currently using a 61″ deck on a slower, less productive mower, a smaller deck on a Scag may still be able to save you incredible amounts of mowing time. Mowers with smaller decks can actually be more productive than larger units if you have a lot of trees and other obstacles on your property. Again, we recommend talking to your Scag dealer to set up a demonstration to determine which model is best for you.

Experienced operators of zero-turn riding mowers can often perform the zero-turn maneuver without causing turf damage. However, while zero-turn mowers can turn on a dime (or in very tight circles), it may not always be the best practice to do so on grass. Even tight turns have the potential to cause turf damage in some situations and conditions. The best way we have found to prevent and/or greatly minimize turf damage is to use 3-point/Y-turns at the end of a mowing row rather than zero-turns to change direction. It is still a fast maneuver and will reduce the potential of turf damage greatly.
Simply adding a relief fitting to the pivot tube would not work as the grease (as with water, electricity, air, etc.) will follow the path of least resistance and would simply go in the grease fitting and directly out of the relief valve. The grease would never reach the top or bottom bearing sets.Take a moment to review the Scag zero-turn-rider comparison chart. If you have further questions about each model, visit your local Scag dealer to see each model for yourself.

The “requirement” to use synthetic oil in a mower is generally the result of producing a machine with a hydro system that has an operating temperature that can exceed the temperature range of the hydraulic components. These systems usually have very small oil reservoirs located in an area without sufficient airflow (due to limited space on the mower) and do not use oil coolers or fans. This is a less expensive way to manufacture mowers, however, the extra cost of the synthetic oil (synthetic oil is normally four to five times the cost of standard oil) is a burden that you, the customer, will have to pay. While we greatly appreciate the loyalty and support of our customers, only authorized Scag dealers and distributors are granted official permission to use corporate-owned images, logos, etc. See the Terms and Conditions page for more information.

Touch-up paint in aerosol form can be purchased from your Scag dealer, either P/N 48008 or P/N 48521. For touch-up of Scag machines prior to 1989, use the 48008. It is slightly lighter in color. For touch-up of Scag machines manufactured in 1989 or later, use the 48521. It is slightly darker and indicates that the machine was painted with the stronger powder paint.Due to the quality construction and the heavy-duty components we use in our products, Scag mowers retain a higher-than-normal resale value. Used equipment values are greatly dependent upon the region you are in and the condition of the specific mower. Therefore, Scag is not able to provide value or pricing information. We suggest that you contact your local Scag dealer to inquire about average values for similar used Scag mower models in your area.

Scag does not offer separate technical service manuals. Your Scag owner’s manual contains a wealth of information regarding the maintenance and adjustment of your Scag mower. If you need more in-depth service than is covered in your owner’s manual, please contact your Scag dealer. They have the factory training, tools and experience to help you keep your mower running at peak performance.
Liquid-cooled engines are slightly more “forgiving” if the exterior of the engine is not kept clean, unlike air-cooled engines that rely upon heat dissipation for proper cooling. There is little extra maintenance involved with a liquid-cooled engine versus an air-cooled one. Keeping the radiator clean is the biggest factor. However, this is simple to do by using the removable screen that can be removed and tapped clean in the field, with no tools required. We have found that by using both of these methods, turf damage is all but a thing of the past. Over a short period of time, it becomes second nature and overall productivity can be increased.

Why are Scag mowers the best?
Scag lawn mowers are built with a heavy-gauge steel frame, making them extremely durable. This heavy-gauge steel frame also helps to ensure that the cutting deck of the lawnmower stays in place, preventing the deck from bending or warping under heavy use.
The main enemy of any hydraulic system is heat. By properly sizing the hydraulic oil reservoir, efficient hose routing, and the use of oil coolers and fans where needed, Scag drive systems have been designed to have normal operating temperatures well within the safe range of the hydraulic components using “standard” oil. Using larger oil tanks, oil coolers and fans (where needed) does add additional cost to the manufacturing process, however, we feel that this extra attention to performance, longevity and value is one of the many reasons people decide to “step up” to a Scag mower.

Generally speaking, it is said that a liquid-cooled engine may last up to 50% longer than comparable air-cooled engines due to a constant, correct operating temperature. Engine-oil viscosity does not break down as quickly due to the more stable temperature ranges at which liquid-cooled engines run. Liquid-cooled engines experience increased fuel economy compared to standard air-cooled models due to the more consistent operating engine temperatures. A properly designed system keeps the radiator out of harm’s way (debris, branches, etc.) and the cooling fan draws hot air through the radiator, past the engine and away from the operator. This results in a cooler engine and a cooler operator.
Since each engine is warranted by the individual engine manufacturer, please refer to your engine owner’s manual or speak to your Scag dealer for specific recommendations. You may also contact the engine manufacturer by visiting their website: Under no circumstances should the machine be operated on slopes greater than 15 degrees (20 degrees for V-Ride™ II). Cut these slopes with a walk-behind mower or hand-held trimmer. If obstructions, walls or drop-offs prevent you from reaching the bottom of the slope to attempt to try the back-up test, stay off of the slope with the riding mower. Do not operate close to drop-offs or along the banks of ponds. For more information regarding the safe and proper operation of your Scag mower, please click here. On “tight” turns, pay special attention to the inside drive wheel. This wheel will naturally spin slower than the outside drive wheel. It is important to keep the inside wheel turning at all times. If the turn is made to cause the inside wheel to stop turning, this is when turf damage can occur. The hour meter on your machine is completely automatic. It will begin to flash a reminder 2 hours before scheduled service is required and will continue for 4 hours. After this 4 hours has passed, the meter will reset itself until 2 hours before the next scheduled service. An example of this would be for the first engine-oil change. This service is required after the first 20 hours of operation. The hour meter will begin to flash “CHG OIL” at 18 hours and will stop flashing at 22 hours. The Scag cutting deck is one aspect that sets it apart from other mowers on the market. The Hero™ Cutter Deck delivers premium performance for both professionals and homeowners. The aluminum spindles are “maintenance-free” for years of reliable performance. Measuring 52″ and 61″, it expands the reach of the mower and gets the job done faster! If you are in the market for a zero turn mower this may be one for you to consider. I was very impressed with the overall performance and build of the Scag Patriot mower. One major difference in the Scag Patriot deck size options is the difference in transaxles. If you don’t have a specific reason for a 52″ deck I would recommend going with the 61″ model to get the more durable ZT-3400 transaxles.

If I personally had the choice, I would go with the Kawasaki FX model engine.

It may be a little higher than some brands, but overall it is a fair priced mower. In the Scag zero turn line, the Freedom Z is a comparable model to the Patriot. The two major things you will notice are the difference in engines and transaxles. The Scag Patriot features commercial engine options and commercial grade Hydro-Gear transaxles. It is built with a steel frame and deck. The spindles are made of aluminum with sealed bearings. Each piece is made for the mower and made to be durable. The cutting height adjustment is also made to be durable with a large handle that is easy to grip and turn.

This is a great-looking mower. The black with the orange accents has a very modern look and feel to it. Overall, I think this mower looks better than most previous Scag models. Now we just have to get rid of those brown seats… lol.

Scag has really done everything they can to make this mower comfortable. Outside of the ride quality, I think this mower is situated well. It is a step up from the Freedom Z model with some true commercial components. The mower is fairly comfortable. It features a suspension seat and an iso-mounted footplate to absorb a lot of the impact. This definitely isn’t the most comfortable mower I’ve ever driven, but it isn’t too bad for a fixed frame mower.

Below is a comparison of the Scag Patriot and Scag Freedom Z. The Patriot is the first commercial grade mower within the Scag lineup. Many people will compare these mowers when making a decision on a mower so I decided to compare these. It comes with a contoured, padded and high-back seat. This is a huge upgrade over the previous Liberty model. The seat on the old model was a bit lagging. This new model also has armrests. The Scag Liberty Z has a forward speed of 7 MPH and 5 MPH reverse. This is pretty good for a residential mower in it’s price range. It isn’t the faster mower on the market, but definitely better than most riding mowers.

With summer in full swing, it’s important that you keep up with your lawn maintenance to ensure you can enjoy the season of barbecues and back yard get-togethers before the warm days are all gone. If you want to get the most out of your summer, make sure to pick a mower that will help Read More…
Hi Mike, Scag doesn’t currently offer a suspension seat for the Liberty Z… at least that I’m aware of. There may be aftermarket options that could work… it would probably require some modifications though. These entry commercial mowers usually don’t have suspension seats because they don’t fit within the frame and probably wouldn’t have enough clearance between your legs and the steering levers.I have a 2018 Liberty z which cuts very good. The only complaint that I have with the mower is the rough ride on a bumpy lawn. I bought a spring cushion that mounts between the seat and the frame. This made a big difference in the ride.

Is Scag the best mower brand?
Scag lawn mowers are easy to work on and typically have a higher service life than other lawnmowers. They are also a great investment because they have a long life of usability, making them a great choice if you’re looking for a long term, solid, grass cutting monster!
I can’t review a Scag without mentioning the aesthetics of the seat… however you may be surprised with this one. I actually like the design of the new seat on the Scag Liberty Z. It finally has a bit of an eye catching and modern design to it.The main frame is made from tubular steel. Hence, users can be sure that it will offer unmatched strength, longevity, and power. You will also like the drive spindles as they are designed for heavy-duty work. They are made from quality aluminum and also have sealed ball bearing. This helps in high-quality performance every season and for many years at a length.

There is no doubt that comfort matters a lot when using a mower and it would be interesting to have a closer look at the comfort characteristics of this mower from Scag Liberty. On the whole, whether it is the design features, ergonomics, looks, performance, cutting prowess, motor power or durability, there are reasons to believe that the Scag Liberty Z zero mower could be the right choice.

This is probably going to be the new wave of Scag’s design. I think they really hit it out of the park with this one. It is an awesome looking mower and let’s be honest… as a homeowner that is something that really matters.
I am so close to buying a 36 or 48 inch Liberty Z. I need to know if you have the mulching blades for the Scag installed and side plate, can you remove the grass shoot so as to keep the width of the machine narrower. If not, probably a 36 inch would get me around obstacles better.I would check with your local dealer to be sure but, to my knowledge, Scag’s hurricane mulch kit fits all Liberty Z models. If you have a mulch kit on you will be able to remove the deflector.

The Scag Liberty offers excellent stability. This is because of a low center of gravity. Further, the extra wide stance of the mower also contributes to the safety attributes positively.
This mower comes with the HydroGear ZT2800 (36″, 48″, or 52″) or HydroGear ZT3100 (61″) transaxles. The ZT2800 transaxles are considered residential grade by HydroGear’s standards. This is the highest end of residential transaxles they offer. The ZT3100 is the first step into the commercial transaxles in HydroGear’s offering.

What engine is in the Scag Freedom Z?

I bought my skagg liberty z about 3 years ago. Have never had one issue or any trouble I would recommend this mower to anyone! My neighbor has been through 2 mowers from Lowe’s the same amount of time. Spring is here and if you are looking for the best self-propelled mower to mow your lawn the Snapper XD 82V mower may be the one. The infinite availability of lawn mowers on the market and the complicated specifications they come with might seem daunting. It doesn’t quite have the cut quality of the slope nosed Velocity deck but it is still a great cutting machine.

I have had a Hustler Fastrak Z 44 inch since 2005. Due to the age of the Hydro Gear Pumps, I am looking at the 48 inch Liberty Z. I only have less than 1 acre to cut from April to October, but just not sure I will like it as much as my Hustler. I am looking for the benefits of switching. Comfort, reliability , Ride and longivity. Thanks. Steve Overall this is a pretty good price compared to other mowers in this price/spec range. They definitely aren’t the cheapest option but they have a quality machine with great specs. It is a pretty good option if your budget can afford it. This Scag liberty mower is powered by Kohler 7000 series or Kawasaki FR series engine. These engines are reliable brands and proven engines. Both of these will last a homeowner a long time. The mower deck is incredibly strong and it has facilities for adjusting cutting heights without getting down from the seat. This has been redesigned from last year and looks better and is a little easier to adjust the height of cut.
