Many later pins were made of brass, a relatively hard and ductile metal that became available during the Bronze Age. This development was followed by the use of steel which was much stronger but tended to rust when exposed to humid air. The development of inexpensive electroplating techniques allowed the steel to be plated with nickel. Nickel did not rust, but tended to flake off the steel in humid weather, again allowing it to rust. However, this took many months or even years to happen, and as nickel plated steel pins were usually used only temporarily to hold fabric in place prior to sewing, no further refinement has been considered necessary. Note, however, that some modern specialty pins are made out of rust-proof and very strong titanium.

What is the difference between one hole and two hole flanges?
This rule of bolt holes straddling the natural centerlines is sometimes referred to as “Two-Hole” the flange. This means that the two of the holes straddle the centerline. To “One-Hole” a flange means that the flange has been rotated so that one hole is right on the natural centerline.

John Ireland Howe invented a pin-making machine in 1832, and an improved machine in 1841; his Howe Manufacturing Company of Derby, Connecticut, used three machines to produce 72,000 pins per day in 1839.The push pin was invented in 1900 by Edwin Moore and quickly became a success. What does 2 hole a flange mean?
To two hole a flange means to have the two top holes of a flange straddle the vertical centerline of the flange. This is easily accomplished using two pins that fit the bolt hole and make the pins level while still straddling the vertical center line.
The DFM Advisor uses a sheet to represent one side of metal, by using the thickness we know where the opposite side of the metal is. The opposite side of the metal will be opposite the face normals. Therefore if the sheet used in the DFM Advisor was not extracted from a solid, one must check that the face normals are as expected for the intended side of the metal. If the sheet was extracted from as solid, the face normals are oriented correctly.For Oblong shapes, the small dimension is checked by using the tolerances above, and the longer dimension is checked using the additional tolerances listed below.Flanged Hole diameter “D” for Round Holes within the tolerance limits must be in the site defined table of allowable hole sizes based on the tolerance type (Gage/Non-Gage). The break radius is found by cutting sections 3D-Radially (normal) to the flanged hole tangency curve, then examining the first radius found. The Flange Flat length must be greater than or equal to Flat Length Minimum Multiple value(?) times metal thickness for all types of holes and also must be less than or equal to Flat Length Maximum Multiple, Gage value(?) (for Gage Holes only) or a nonconformance will be reported.
From the detailed illustration above, the total flange length is the flange flat length plus the break radius. This distance must be less than the flange hole diameter “D” (D1 for slots) divided by Flange Length Maximum Multiple value(?) .
