Weigela Black Minor

To get your weigela shrub off to a good start, always dig a generous hole and add mycorrhizal fungi. Ensure it’s planted at the same depth it was in the pot and water well. In dry conditions, keep watering regularly until you spot signs of growth.Grow weigela in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Prune back after flowering and mulch annually with a well-rotted compost or leaf mould.

Weigela middendorffiana – this variety has bright green leaves with pale yellow flowers, often with contrasting markings in the centre of the bell-shaped flowers.
Weigelas make the perfect garden shrub. Low-maintenance, they’re easy to grow and work well in a variety of situations, including mixed borders. The leaves of weigela are deciduous and range from dark green to light green, golden and variegated shades. The funnel-shaped flowers are a hit with bumblebees, and range in colour from deep pink to yellow, appearing in early summer.Weigelas are easy to look after. Prune moderately, after flowering has finished. Established weigelas also respond well to hard pruning if they have outgrown their spot – you can cut back stems to ground level to encourage new growth.

Weigela ‘Naomi Campbell’ = ‘Bokrashine’ (PBR) – a compact, bushy, rounded shrub growing to about 1m. The dark green foliage is tinged with bronzy-purple and flowers are a dark pinkish-red.Weigela florida ‘Variegata’ – this is one of the best variegated cultivars. It’s smaller and more compact, with cream and green leaves, and pink flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they’re suitable for the majority of planting requirements.Anthracnose: This is a fungus disease causes brown spots with purple edges on the leaves. The spots turn black in the center; leaves become yellow, dry and fall off. The fungus overwinters in diseased plant debris. Burpee Recommends: Avoid overhead watering which can spread the fungus spores. Keep a clean garden, remove and discard all diseased plant material. Use a mulch to prevent spores from splashing from the soil onto plants.

Black Spot: This is a fungal disease that affects leaves. It usually occurs in hot, humid or rainy weather. Black circular spots appear on the upper and undersides of leaves. The outer margins of the circles are ragged. The spots can enlarge and merge. The leaves often fall off the plant leaving the plant defoliated. The damage is often worse on the lower leaves. Burpee Recommends: Remove all debris from under the plants. Avoid getting the leaves wet. A mulch under the plants will help prevent spores from splashing up.
Mealybugs: Mealybugs are 1/8 to ¼ inch long flat wingless insects that secrete a white powder that forms a waxy shell that protects them. They form cottony looking masses on stems, branches and leaves. They suck the juices from leaves and stems and cause weak growth. They also attract ants with the honeydew they excrete, and the honeydew can grow a black sooty mold on it as well. Burpee Recommends: Wash affected plant parts and try to rub the bugs off. They may also be controlled by predator insects such as lacewings, ladybugs and parasitic wasps. Check with your Cooperative Extension Service for pesticide recommendations.Spider Mites: These tiny spider-like pests are about the size of a grain of pepper. They may be red, black, brown or yellow. They suck on the plant juices removing chlorophyll and injecting toxins which cause white dots on the foliage. There is often webbing visible on the plant. They cause the foliage to turn yellow and become dry and stippled. They multiply quickly and thrive in dry conditions. Burpee Recommends: Spider mites may be controlled with a forceful spray every other day. Try hot pepper wax or insecticidal soap. Check with your Cooperative Extension Service for miticide recommendations.

What is the speed of growth of weigela?
Weigela is a relatively slow-growing plant, with a growth rate of around 20cm – 40cm per year, so it can take some time to grow into a hedge, but with a little patience it does make a truly beautiful informal garden hedge.
Aphids: Greenish, red, black or peach colored sucking insects can spread disease as they feed on the undersides of leaves. They leave a sticky residue on foliage that attracts ants. Burpee Recommends: Introduce or attract natural predators into your garden such as lady beetles and wasps which feed on aphids. You can also wash them off with a strong spray, or use an insecticidal soap.

Are Weigelas Hardy?
Planting & Care for Weigela Flowering Shrubs It’s extremely reliable and hardy. Most varieties flower best if planted in full sun. Shield them from strong wind, too, which can damage flowers and “burn” soft, new leaves.
Botrytis: This fungus causes a grey mold on flowers, leaves, stems and buds. It thrives in cool wet weather conditions. Burpee Recommends: Remove affected plant parts, avoid watering at night and getting water on the plant when watering. Make sure plants have good air circulation. Contact your Cooperative Extension Service for fungicide recommendations.

Rust: A number of fungus diseases that causes rust colored spots on foliage and stalks. Leafroller: Caterpillars or pupae are found on the inside a folded leaf tied with silk. These feed on leaves and fruit surfaces. They overwinter as pupae or eggs, depending on the species, and emerge in the spring. Burpee Recommends: Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service for insecticide recommendations.
Powdery Mildew: This fungus disease occurs on the top of the leaves in humid weather conditions. The leaves appear to have a whitish or greyish surface and may curl. Burpee Recommends: Avoid powdery mildew by providing good air circulation for the plants by good spacing and pruning. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America.

Minor Black Weigela makes a fine choice for the outdoor landscape, but it is also well-suited for use in outdoor pots and containers. Because of its height, it is often used as a ‘thriller’ in the ‘spiller-thriller-filler’ container combination; plant it near the center of the pot, surrounded by smaller plants and those that spill over the edges. It is even sizeable enough that it can be grown alone in a suitable container. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag – this is to be expected. Also note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden.

Is weigela full sun?
Plant this shrub in the full sun to light shade or dappled sunlight, though the best flowering and foliage color will occur in full sun. Weigela typically grows from 6 to 10 feet tall and 9 to 12 feet wide; however, cultivars tend to be smaller.
This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season’s flowers. It is a good choice for attracting hummingbirds to your yard. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Minor Black Weigela is bathed in stunning clusters of hot pink trumpet-shaped flowers along the branches in late spring. It has attractive burgundy deciduous foliage which emerges dark red in spring. The pointy leaves are highly ornamental but do not develop any appreciable fall color.Minor Black Weigela is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a mounded form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. Minor Black Weigela will grow to be about 3 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 4 feet. It has a low canopy. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years. A stunning spring-flowering shrub, featuring electric pink trumpet-shaped flowers that attract birds and butterflies; foliage is so dark red it appears black from a distance; perfect for foundations, groups in borders, or a low hedge; needs full sunSeeds and garden supplies will normally be delivered within the time period stated against each product as detailed above. Overwatering plants can also cause black leaves. Don’t let your plants sit in water in a cachepot and make sure that your container has a hole in the bottom so excess water can drain out. Overwatering is the very common and a top reason for indoor plants dying. Too much water prevents the roots of the plant from taking in air and causes root rot. Be sure to use a container with bottom drip holes to prevent both overwatering and root rot. If you see white spots building up on the surface of your soil, that is generally a salt build-up. Salts can come from your water, the potting mixtures, and fertilizers. ‘Flush Watering’ a plant regularly will leech out soils and will prevent this. Most house plants are native to tropical areas. They prefer warm, humid conditions. To keep your plants comfortable try keeping them in areas that are between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything below 55 degrees will not be plant friendly. Also make sure that your green space is properly ventilated and relatively humid.Black leaves on your plants can be reversed, but in some cases are a sign of disease, fungus, or bacterial problems. Because of this risk, the safest thing to do is to remove the plant from your other plants as soon as you notice. This action can prevent a tragedy in your collection. Also be wary of Whiteflies, an insect that can spread bacterial infections between your plants!

This disease spreads quickly and can affect any plants in the garden. In order not to risk the health of the pets, the diseased plant must be urgently dug up and burned.

Why are my weigela leaves turning black?
Common Disease & Cultural Problems for Weigela Plants Anthracnose: This is a fungus disease causes brown spots with purple edges on the leaves. The spots turn black in the center; leaves become yellow, dry and fall off. The fungus overwinters in diseased plant debris.
A shrub with fragile branches and delicate flowers, it suffers greatly from the wind. Therefore, the site for planting weigels must be protected from drafts.

It is necessary to plant a shrub in a permanent place in open ground in the spring. Weigela Minor Black has very low frost resistance. Saplings take a long time to adapt to a new place. When planting in autumn, the plant does not have time to grow strong enough and may die in winter. In case of late acquisition of weigela, it is better to dig in the seedling in the garden, sprinkling the crown halfway with loose soil. In this state, a young plant can easily overwinter. The plant is easy to propagate by seed. But it should be noted that Minor Black is a hybrid variety. Therefore, the varietal qualities of plants grown from seeds may differ from the parental variant.

Pruning is carried out after flowering. It is necessary to remove the old branches and cut the young growth in half to give the bush the correct shape. Re-pruning with normal plant development is required no more often than after 2-3 years.
You need to water the bushes regularly. In this case, it is important to ensure that moisture does not stagnate in the trunk circle. An adult bush requires up to 10 – 15 liters of water. Watering is done more frequently during dry summer months.Blooming Weigela Minor Black is demanding on soil fertility. But, if the plant is overfed, or fertilizers are applied incorrectly, then flowering can not wait.

To grow Weigela Minor Black, you need to choose a place that is illuminated by the sun most of the day. With a lack of light, the branches of the plant quickly become lignified. Such a bush hardly blooms. To prepare the weigels for frost, they carry out the last fertilization of the season. You can use complex potassium preparations. Some gardeners bring in wood ash at the rate of 1 glass per 1 square meter when digging a site around the shrub. It is noteworthy that Minor Black weigela flowers can change color over time. The pale pink bells get brighter and darker over time. Flowering ends with the formation of fruit bolls with seeds inside. The main problem with growing weigela Minor Black outdoors is its strong sensitivity to cold. The plant must be covered for the winter. Due to the low winter hardiness of the Minor Black weigela, the culture is not recommended for planting in the northern regions.

Where does a weigela grow best?
Where to grow weigela. Weigela is an easy-going shrub that suits most growing conditions. Plant it in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
Weigela Minor Black reproduces well by self-seeding. It remains for the gardener to transplant the grown seedlings in the spring, choosing the most developed plants.Weigela develops well and blooms, growing on loose soils. Therefore, when planting, it is advisable to add perlite, polystyrene or any other fine-grained drainage mixture to the soil. The soil should be composed of sand and turf in equal proportions. For nutritional value, it is necessary to add part of the compost or well-rotted manure.

Weigela develops well and blooms luxuriantly, growing on loose soil. After watering, it is necessary to loosen the trunk circle to a depth of 10 cm each time.
The seeds are harvested in late autumn. No soaking or stimulation is required for germination. Seeds are sown in dry sand and watered until germination. High-quality seed material, subject to humidity and temperature conditions, usually germinates no later than in a month.Weigela of the Honeysuckle family is named after the German botanist Weigel. This flowering shrub came to Europe from Southeast Asia, where more than a dozen species of this shrub grow. In Russia, weigela is found in the wild in the Far East. No more than 10 types of shrubs are cultivated in gardens and parks. Weigela Minor Black is one of the most beautiful members of the family. You can feed fertilizer in the spring with dry preparations, which need to be poured into the trunk circle of each bush. An adult plant requires about 50 g of a mixture of urea, superphosphate and potassium salt in a 2: 2: 1 ratio. Layers can also be used to breed shrubs in the garden. To obtain a seedling in the fall, the lowest branch from the mother bush is added dropwise, after removing all the foliage, except for the top one. A healthy seedling will be ready by spring. It is separated and transplanted into a growing tub.The main reason why weigela Black Minor has become popular with gardeners is the flowering of the shrub twice a year. The first time the shrub is covered with abundant flowers in June – July. This is the last year’s shoots blooming. This fascinating process lasts up to four weeks. When buying a weigela seedling, you should pay attention to the age of the plant. The most suitable for planting in the garden are three-year-old bushes. Weigela, blooming Minor Black, has a hard time transferring to a new place. Younger seedlings rarely take root or get sick for a long time. The next dressing should help the shrub form flower buds. This requires about 50 g of superphosphate and potassium sulfate in equal proportions per bush. Top dressing is best done with a liquid nutrient solution under the root. The first feeding is carried out in early spring. Sometimes fertilizers are applied before the snow cover melts. But experts consider this method ineffective. Together with melt water, the fertilizer will be dispersed over the site. For Weigela, such feeding is not enough to wake up and feed. Weigela perfectly complements the group planting of green plants. An unpretentious plant can coexist with juniper or thuja. Weigela is often used to shape an alpine slide. Bright foliage and lush flowering shrubs can be used to add volume to a flower bed against a background of stones. It is necessary to regularly water future seedlings so that the soil is constantly moist. Rooting is better if you make a film cap or a mini greenhouse for the cuttings. It is imperative to ventilate the seedlings so that condensation on the walls of the shelter does not lead to decay of the plants.Weigelu Minor Black is propagated by cuttings and seeds. A blank of planting material for cuttings is cut in the spring until flower buds are formed. Young branches with green bark are cut with a sharp tool at a 90 degree angle. The length of the workpiece should be no more than 15 cm.

What is the world's most fragrant shrub?
Daphne Perfume Princess Developed over a period of some 10 years, Daphne Perfume Princess was nearly forgotten in the breeders nursery in New Zealand, but luckily he was bowled over by the heady scent when the plant first bloomed.
Rodents pose a danger to the plant in winter. To protect the bush from mice, it is necessary to compact the snow in the trunk circle. You can pour water around the weigela. Then the mice will not be able to reach the plant through the ice layer.

Weigela Minor Black looks spectacular in any garden combination. Gardeners argue that the only difficulty in caring for a shrub is getting it right for winter. Weigela will thank for the labors with a lush double flowering.
The hybrid dwarf weigela Minor Black is also suitable as a tub culture. But usually shrubs are grown in flowerpots only up to three years of age. Then the plant is transplanted to a suitable place in the garden.Weigela Minor Black bushes are planted at a distance of about a meter from each other and from neighboring bushes. If the plant is located near buildings, then you need to retreat 1.5 – 2 m in order to ensure an approach to it from all sides. The color range of the leaves is from red to dark purple. Some leaf blades become almost black over time. Shrub and flowering are notable. Bright or dark pink flowers cover the crown of the weigela, turning it into a garden decoration. Narrow five-petalled bells are collected in inflorescences of several pieces.Thrips, aphids and spider mites often infect weigela Minor Black bushes. To control them, you can use any insecticide that is sold to protect against leaf-eating insects.

The soil for blooming weigela Minor Black needs alkaline or neutral. It is imperative to make a drainage layer to avoid stagnant moisture and soil acidification. The composition of the soil must be saturated with nutrients.
Experienced gardeners advise planting cuttings in separate containers. The bushes need to be grown to a permanent place for one and a half to two years. To make the future seedling sufficiently developed and lush, the top of the cutting after the formation of the roots is shortened by a third.

Before the onset of frost, the trunk circle is covered with a thick layer of compost. The branches of the plant must be carefully pulled together with twine or wire. After that, wrap it up with kraft paper, agrospan or other insulating material.
Dwarf deciduous shrub reaches a height of no more than a meter. Its shoots are mainly vertical. The dense, lush crown is formed from pointed leaves, different in color. The diameter of the crown of an adult weigela Minor Black shrub usually does not exceed 1 m.

In order not to waste time and effort on maintaining the looseness of the site for the weigela, you can mulch the near-trunk circle after watering with a thick layer. Mulch is prepared from a mixture of sawdust, compost and peat. The layer can be up to 10 cm.
The second flowering in the season is provided by young shoots. And, despite the fact that this picture is not as bright as the first plant covered with delicate flowers in September, at least it looks exotic against the background of fading vegetation.

In early spring, it is imperative to shake off heavy wet snow from the weigela’s shelter. Its fragile branches break easily under the weight of the snow mass.

The hole for planting weigela Minor Black should be about 50 cm deep. The grown weigela has a fairly large root system. The planting pit is recommended to be made in the form of a square with a side of 50 – 60 cm.Sequencing:It is imperative to process the cuts on the branches with garden pitch or resin. Weigela is susceptible to fungal diseases, the pathogens of which can penetrate through cuts and wounds on wood.

Small shrub with purple foliage, suitable for a container or the border of a shrub bed. Spreading habit, 40 cm high and wide. Very abundant purple pink blossoming in may.

Then when you add new plants to your garden, we will tell you whether they will work for you. Choose plants that are pest and disease free and typical of the mother plant. Select stems of pencil thickness and using sharp secateurs cut a long section of stem just above a node.  Discard the top of the shoot which may have few food reserves and cut the remainder of the stem into 15 – 25cm (6 – 10in) lengths each with a minimum of three buds. Hardwood cuttings are suitable for many deciduous shrubs, and are taken from the current year’s growth at or after leaf fall and before new leaves emerge the following spring.

Rooting may take several months.  Rooted cuttings may be potted on or planted out individually and grown on for planting in their final position when established.
Use a slanting cut at the top and a straight cut at the base of the cutting to ensure they are planted the right way up!  A sliver of bark can be removed from the bottom 1 – 2cm (0.5 – 1in) of the cutting to encourage rooting.

Should Weigela be pruned?
Prune these spring flowering shrubs soon after they have bloomed. Top prune the plant to improve the shape and reduce its size but, be careful not to remove more than 30% of the top growth. Some summer pruning can also be done on particularly vigorous plants but, not after mid-July.
Insert the cuttings to half their length and firm the compost or soil around them.  Water lightly and place pots in a sheltered position. Or prepare a slit trench in spare ground by working a spade back and forward in the soil.  Add some grit or sand to the base of the trench to aid drainage

Dip the cutting base in fresh rooting hormone powder, ensuring that the cut is well covered. Tap off excess, and then insert the cutting in a pot of standard cutting compost and put in a cold frame. Water in well.Ensure that the compost remains moist, but not wet, until the cuttings are well rooted. To use this propagation method, remove sideshoots of the current season’s growth from the main plant using sharp secateurs. Trim them to 10-15cm lengths, cutting just below a node. Removing the lowest leaves and soft tip, then make a shallow cut, 1-2cm long, on one side of the stem base.

The epithet, florida, means “beautiful.” This plant is a dense, rounded, deciduous shrub with somewhat coarse branches that tend to arch toward the ground as the shrub reaches maturity. For approximately two weeks, in each mid-to late spring, after the leaves emerge, showy, rosy-colored tubular flowers cover the shrub and have a repeat, though sparser, performance in mid to late summer. Plant this shrub in the full sun to light shade or dappled sunlight, though the best flowering and foliage color will occur in full sun.

In the United States and North America, this shrub is used in the landscape as a foundation plant, in a mass planting, or on a shrub border. Many of the dwarf cultivars can be grown as container plants. Weigela is air pollution and clay soil tolerant and is lightly salt tolerant.NC State University and N.C.
