As XSRUS observes, OnlyFans has a better model than Uber or Airbnb. An owner of an Uber car or Airbnb property can only cater to one group of customers at a time. We can merely extrapolate from articles published over time. In 2019, OnlyFans apparently reached 7 million registered users. A January 2020 article from the Economist (profiling British OnlyFans star Lucy-Anne Brooks) states that by this point, OnlyFans claimed to have 12 million registered users.

Since a lot of the content on OnlyFans is explicit, users have to be at least 18 and will need a government-issued ID in order to sign up. Every creator’s branded content is also protected by OnlyFans, ensuring that it can’t be shared outside the platform. In fact, if a user tries to take a screenshot on the site, the content will show up blacked out. Users are also subject to banning if they’re caught trying to screenshot or record what’s going on.

Ultimately, Bella Thorne only remained on OnlyFans for a short while. She caused controversy for offering $200 pay-per-view photos for “naked” pictures, but the images actually showed her wearing lingerie. This caused numerous refund requests, resulting in OnlyFans allegedly changing the rules regarding payment rates and chargebacks. Sex workers on the platform complained that Thorn’s actions reduced their livelihood.Since OnlyFans lets people post content that would get them banned on other social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, it’s also widely used by sex workers and amateur pornographers who upload videos and images, and who interact with their fans using direct messages.

Even though Huldt had a large Instagram following before she joined OnlyFans, she revealed to Business Insider that she works on OnlyFans content seven days a week to maintain her level of earnings. Huldt offered up some advice for creators considering joining OnlyFans to earn money: “I would never advise someone doing it if they only wanted to do it like two days a week or something. It’s not a part-time thing in your mind. You wouldn’t make enough money.”

XSRUS has crunched the numbers to come up with some estimated earnings by OnlyFans creators. They calculate that the median accounts earn about $180/month. However, they do observe that their calculations exclude tipping, as there is no information available about money received as tips on OnlyFans.Of course, influencers and celebrities have a natural advantage when it comes to earning money on OnlyFans. They bring a ready-made audience with them. It presumably isn’t hard to bring a proportion of an existing sizable Instagram following to OnlyFans and make money from them.

However, it must be pointed out that one reason for this inequality is that the majority of OnlyFans accounts have no fans at all. They aren’t set up for serious broadcasting. The referral program used to payout 5% of the referred creator’s earnings for life but with the platform’s popularity, referrals are now being limited to the year following signup, up to the first $1 million earned by the referred creator. Some creators have taken to creating and supporting a petition to push OnlyFans to reinstate the old system, especially since many sex workers are relying on the OnlyFans platform for their income. When you consider that OnlyFans already takes 20% off the top of creator earnings, this isn’t really an unfair expectation. Before long, her earnings had doubled to $2 million. She had set her OnlyFans subscription at $20 per month (with a limited-time 20% discount for a one-month subscription and 15% off if fans purchase three- or six-month access).

If you’re a content creator, you’re going to have more competition, but that competition will be known to be AI-generated because the platforms are required to keep ID documents on record of performers in sexually explicit videos.So, there will be two classes of OnlyFans models — human and AI-generated. Presumably, real human creators will still retain an edge, though these days one can’t be too sure.

So, what does this mean for the OnlyFans content industry? Well, for one thing, it means that a LOT of new competition is coming for OnlyFans creators. Good managers and OnlyFans agencies will typically like to see the creator making at least $5,000 per month consistently before they will agree to consider taking them on. Yeah, I know, but this is actually a smart move on their part. Reaching earnings of $10,000 per month on OnlyFans will be a breeze for digital marketers when sophisticated AI content generation comes to town. And it’s not a matter of if anymore — it’s a matter of when. The model will probably be much easier to work with, will be more professional, will deliver the needed content on time, and will be more likely to stay at it long-term. Remember, a manager is actually taking a significant risk when they sign a creator. The manager invests time and often money in developing social media accounts for the particular model. If he or she flakes after a few weeks, the manager is up a creek.All that consistent posting, interaction with fans, and trend analysis can be difficult for a non-marketer to pull off long-term. Most content creators are not used to those duties, don’t like them, and therefore can’t be reasonably expected to fulfill them on their own. They need help.OnlyFans managers will typically take between 30% and 50% of a model’s earnings, which can induce a good bit of sticker shock for most creators. But when you realize that, in most cases, these 5-figure monthly incomes are not even possible without a team effort, it makes sense to go with management. Well, I’m a veteran adult webmaster who has had various adult digital marketing businesses for over 20 years now. A PPV post is an OnlyFans post where the image or video content portion is “locked” and cannot be viewed unless “unlocked” by the subscriber. This is done by paying an unlock fee that is set by the creator. PPVs can be posted to the timeline on a free OnlyFans account, but not on a premium account. On premium accounts, they are DMed directly to the inboxes of subscribers.This is VERY frustrating for managers who are tasked with producing a steady stream of new subscribers for an OnlyFans account. Social media promotion requires a lot of regular content to build momentum and keep the attention of new followers. If there are sudden stops in posting activity that last days or week, that critical momentum can be lost, and then it’s back to the starting line.

When seeking a deal, I always advise models to make it clear to a manager or agency that they are very willing and capable of producing whatever content is required on time. They should then make sure to fulfill that commitment once the deal is signed. This alone will dramatically improve the chances that a partnership will occur.The issue of how exactly to promote OnlyFans on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok is actually huge in the content creator community, because it can be really tricky. UK law states that you must be 18 or older to sell or distribute explicit content. However, there currently is no legal requirement for online platforms to monitor explicit content that could have originated from underage users. This means the creator of the content and the person that buys it would face criminal liability if any action were taken.

Patreon is a membership platform that works similar to OnlyFans. It is often promoted by content creators on YouTube and Instagram, offering additional content to those who are subscribed. Some content may include adult themes.

In May 2019, OnlyFans introduced a new account verification process. A Creator now must provide a ‘selfie’ along with their ID in the image to prove their identity. Yet, research showed that underage users used other people’s IDs, creating accounts without a problem. This suggests that the age verification is not strong enough.
