While your leopard gecko doesn’t need UV to survive, it does need a day and night cycle. Use full-spectrum lighting, or UV lighting, for 12 hours a day. Keep the enclosure dark for the other 12 hours. This allows the gecko to live out its natural nocturnal habits.

There’s a lot of discussions about whether or not a true moonglow exists. This is because many moonglow crested geckos are fired down and have other colors when they fire up.

Although Crested Geckos are nocturnal and do not require much direct exposure to sunlight, there is growing evidence that exposure to low levels of UV light is beneficial to their overall health and encourages natural behaviours. A 5% UV light should be used to help the gecko use the calcium from its diet. Crested Geckos can tolerate handling but they can be nervous and jumpy so please be patient. If they are terrified, then they can drop their tails which will not grow back. Children should always be supervised with any animals and as they are expert climbers, care should be taken to avoid your Crested Gecko escaping whilst handling. Be aware that they can become too cold if kept out of the enclosure for a long time in cold weather. Do not handle your Crested Gecko for at least 24 hours when you first take them home to allow them to settle into the new surroundings. It is important for hygiene reasons to wash your hands with an anti-bacterial hand wash before and after handling your Crested Gecko. Crested geckos require higher humidity and lower temperatures than most commonly kept reptile species, so a glass terrarium is a great choice for them. Because crested geckos are arboreal they will need more height than depth, and a 45 x 45 x 60cm (18 x 18 x 24”) is the minimum size for a single crested gecko. Bigger is better though and we would advise going for the bigger enclosure, such as the 60 x 45 x 60cm (24 x 18 x 24”). While shedding, they can become less “sticky” from going into shed, so it’s a good practice to provide a crested gecko with a Reptihammock. As these geckos are nocturnal, it is important to provide cover for hiding behind during the day. Plastic and silk plants are great for this. Crested geckos are also masters of their arboreal domain, and will very much appreciate a variety of climbing structures within their tank. Do not over clutter the tank. Leave plenty of open space.Pets Corner’s opinion is that crested geckos thrive when they are fed a complete powdered diet, such as Repashy that is supplemented with insects. Repashy is mixed with two parts water and offered in shallow dishes three times a week as much as these geckos will eat at a feeding. The diet is allowed to remain 24 to 36 hours before removal. With regards to insects, locusts are the best choice and you should select a size where the length of locust equals the width of the head. locusts should be lightly coated with Calcidust every meal. Also on alternate days, the insects must be lightly dusted with a vitamin D3 supplement such as Nutrobal. A shallow dish of water should be placed in the bottom of your crested gecko’s terrarium. Keep it constantly full.

The substrate used with crested geckos should be one that not only promotes humidity but is easy to spot clean as well. Orchid bark, cypress mulch, coco bedding, or a combination are all excellent choices. Patches of sphagnum moss not only adds interest and beauty to the enclosure but will further aid in humidity management.

Crested geckos do require moderate humidity. This can be accomplished by misting the cage once or twice a day. Ideally, the humidity level should not drop below 50%. Crested geckos should get several hours of higher humidity (80-100%) every day to ensure that they shed properly. Misting heavily once or twice a day will achieve the required higher humidity levels. Crested geckos are one of the most popular lizard pets. And this is all for a reason – crested geckos make amazing pets. Crested geckos are good pet lizards for both beginners and advanced keepers. They have a lot to offer – their amazing personalities and looks will not fail to amaze you! Crested geckos are naturally found on the islands of New Caledonia, located near Australia and Fiji. Crested geckos are arboreal, meaning that they like climbing trees and shrubs in their natural environment. Crested geckos have sticky pads on their toes which allows them to climb smooth surfaces, including glass. Crested geckos are nocturnal and spend their time during the day in cover, being mostly inactive and hiding.A Lilly White crested gecko is a high white crested gecko. The tail will be solid white from the base to the tip with no breakage when looking at the tail from a top view and the eyes will be a silvery grey colour.Lilly Whites geckos are not usually bred to other Lilly Whites geckos due to high fatality in the off-spring. However, pairing a Lilly White to a non-Lilly White gecko should result in Lilly White and non-Lilly White offspring.Lilly white is one of the first recognized gene variants to occur within the captive-bred population. The breeder who founded this trait was Lilly Exotics.

Over the course of a few months it became clear that around half of the offspring were Lilly Whites and the remainder were normal looking harlequins. It seemed reasonable to assume that we were dealing with a dominant/co-dominant trait, with the Lilly White being the co-dom form. The obvious aim now was to breed Lilly White x Lilly White to see if there is a dominant or ‘super’ form that would exaggerate or alter the pattern and colour as is routinely seen in ball pythons.

In late 2010, we randomly hatched out an incredible gecko – a pinstripe-looking animal but with stunning white/cream colouring. It was completely different to anything we had hatched before, or had seen elsewhere and was obviously going to be a keeper.As luck would have it, our little ‘Lilly White’ baby turned out to be a male. In 2012, we bred him to three young virgin adult females and soon we were in possession of several pearly white eggs.

In 2014, we found out the answer………. and the answer is yes and no. Yes in that the ‘super’ form is a uniform white leucistic gecko but no in that sadly the leucistic offspring do not seem viable and either don’t hatch or die shortly afterwards. This is a known phenomenon in some types of leucistic morphs in other reptiles. We have tried with different geckos with the same end result so far. As we have not yet hatched a viable leucistic crested gecko, we have not given a name to this ‘super’ form.

Lilly White crested geckos will have white/cream colouring along the belly. You will be able to see the white/cream colouring from underneath your gecko up to the lower laterals. This is likely to spread as the gecko ages. The white/creamy colour along the lower lateral with show slightly raised compared to the base of the gecko…

Fast forward a couple of months and the very first egg to hatch was a replica of the father, suggesting the trait was genetic. The second egg that hatched was normal looking as were the third, and the fourth. This combination is the worst. The males will be territorial and will fight each other for dominance and hierarchy. The males will also try to breed with the female and chase it. Little is known about the social structure of crested geckos in the wild. We can’t also conclude anything from the social structure of other species of geckos. In our current knowledge, there are no signs that crested geckos get lonely. Crested geckos have less complex emotions and don’t need a companion. They won’t get health issues when they’re kept as solitary pets in a terrarium.The question of whether or not it’s OK to keep crested geckos in a group is discussed on many forums and Facebook groups. A minority has positive experiences with keeping crested geckos in a group. Most owners will advise against it.

One of the principles in taking care of a pet is to keep it in its natural social structure. You should keep group animals in a group and solitary animals alone. For this reason, it’s essential to know about your pet’s social behavior, in this case, the crested gecko.Female crested geckos can be kept in a small group with minimal risk of fighting. Females are less territorial but can establish a hierarchy. Most female crested geckos have a higher social tolerance and stay friendly towards each other.

There are many different types of cages that can be used. All screen cages do provide ample climbing room but it is harder to keep the humidity up in them, sterilite containers can also be used for housing but be sure to provide ventilation by cutting out a section for mesh or cut holes in it using a drill or wood burning tool. If mold is growing you need more ventilation.

Crested Geckos do not need any form of supplemental heating or lighting, this is what makes them such an easy pet to keep. They do well at daytime temperatures ranging from 74 – 78 and night time temperatures around 70 – 72. Room temperature works well as long as your house does not get above 82 or below 60.

Height is more important than width as crested geckos like to climb vines, trees, and plants. A hide box can be provided on the floor of the cage, they seem to enjoy a safe dark place to curl up and sleep during the day. We use paper towels or newspaper as a substrate, it’s easy to clean up and haven’t had any impaction problems using it.

Geckos less than 10g can be kept in a small kritter keeper. Adults should be kept in no smaller than a 20 gallon.

There doesn’t seem to be a magic number when it comes to humidity. What I do is provide fresh drinking water in a shallow bowl every day and I also mist the cage each night. In the winter I mist morning and evening because our house if very dry from the furnace. It is important to provide a humidity cycle. Let the cage completely dry out between mistings. Spraying too much will grow mold which can make your gecko sick. Dehydration can also have adverse effects so be sure to watch for wrinkling of the skin and lethargy. If you keep the temperatures within a safe range, provide fresh water every day and mist nightly you shouldn’t have a problem with dehydration. You should try to shoot for around 60% humidity with spikes to 80% after misting. The adults that like live insects receive them once a week. All babies and juveniles get gut loaded crickets and or dubia roaches dusted with calcium at least once or twice a week. When feeding crickets be sure they are gut loaded (fed a nutritious meal) a day prior to feeding to your crested. Some local pet stores sell crickets that are already gut loaded. There are many many choices when it comes to housing and decorations.The terrarium should have a high humidity level: 60% during the day and up to 90% at night. Little lamps will keep them warm enough. But too much heat will cause stress. As well as live prey, crested geckos also eat fruit.Crested geckos have little spikes near their eyes that look like eyelashes. They form a ridge at both sides of the head that runs along the body to the tail. These animals can be gray, brown, green, yellow or red and can have a range of different markings e.g. stripes or spots. Males shouldn’t be kept together because they don’t get on. You can either keep males separately or keep a pair of females (while you’re starting out).

Choose an enclosure that is solid on at least three of its four sides in order to retain proper humidity inside it. A screen top and front panel will provide plenty of ventilation while still being able to retain humidity better than an all-screen enclosure. To create more humidity in an all-screen enclosure, fasten a sheet of durable plastic or Plexiglas to the outside walls using a thick, double-sided tape, leaving one side open for ventilation.

The Repashy Superfoods Crested Gecko Diet and the Gorgeous Gecko Gourmet Crested Gecko Diet are both excellent balanced diets. Mixed with water, they create a soupy mixture geckos will lap up from a shallow dish. When offered, these foods need to be replaced within 24 hours because by the second night, all of their vitamins and many nutrients will have oxidized and fermentation will have begun. The food might look okay, but it will no longer possess the optimal nutritional values.Long branches of sterilized wood, bamboo or tubes of cork bark and even PVC tubing can be included as climbing sites. There is an array of arboreal hides and feeding ledges available that attach to the side of the cage using magnets; these are perfect for crested geckos. Ground shelters such as coco huts and caves can also be placed on the bottom of the cage for geckos to retreat to during daylight hours.

Crested geckos will not grow back their tails if dropped. In fact, most wild crested geckos do not have tails. A crested gecko will detach its tail in defense, leaving it behind to flop around and distract a would-be predator while the gecko flees to safety. In captivity, simply being startled or held too tightly can cause pet crested geckos to feel threatened and drop their tails. Those without their tails should not be considered any less beautiful, however. I have several tailless cresteds, and consider them just as beautiful as the ones with tails.One of the crested gecko’s most fascinating and entertaining abilities is being able to clean its eyes with its tongue. You will often see them licking their eyeballs after a good misting. Look closely, too, to see the crested gecko’s trademark hint of a smile. And as if these physical attributes were not endearing or interesting enough, the crested gecko also has sticky toe pads equipped with lamellae (microscopic cilia hairs) that allows it to climb vertical surfaces with ease.You can use tap water after filtering the chlorine out; a water pitcher equipped with a simple charcoal filter will do so. Water that has had its natural minerals removed, such as reverse osmosis and distilled water, is not suitable for any reptile, including the crested gecko. Offering this type of water can be potentially harmful over the long term because water depleted of its minerals will require minerals to be leached from the gecko’s body in order to be properly absorbed.

During the winter months it can be difficult to maintain higher humidity levels. Adding a moist hide can help, especially if you’ve got young geckos that are more prone to stuck sheds. Fill a plastic container with a moistened substrate such as sphagnum moss with a hole cut into the lid. The container and the hole should be large enough to allow your geckos to enter and burrow into the moss. For adults, I use a 7 by 4 by 4-inch plastic food container; a smaller container can be used for smaller geckos.

Crested geckos love to jump and climb. Their arboreal nature makes them the perfect candidates for an enclosure with lots of vines, branches and other climbing surfaces. I highly recommend anything that extends from the top of the enclosure to the bottom. Attach a twistable artificial vine to the underside of the screen top and let it spiral down to the floor of the cage. I entwine a long, plastic plant along the length of the vine, as well. A sturdy floral wire threaded through the screen can be used to attach plants and vines to the top.There are also designer, and typically more expensive, crested morphs, such as Calico or Tri-color, Sorbet Swirl, Reverse or Phantom Pinstripe, Super Harlequin and Super Dalmatian.

When adding a new gecko to an existing colony, a minimum 60-day quarantine period is required. I always recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet right away to check for pin worms, hookworms or other parasites. These can piggyback on some feeder insects and be ingested in small doses, and it is common for reptiles to harbor a small parasite load without showing signs of ill health. Then all it may take is a stressful situation, such as moving your gecko’s habitat or a change in enclosure temperature, to create a window of opportunity for a parasite to thrive and make your gecko sick.

The ideal temperature range for their enclosure is between 68 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is generally room temperature for most households. If your home is regularly warmer than 82 degrees, a crested gecko is not the gecko for you. Hardy as these geckos are, overheating is their weakness, and they will die rather quickly if overheated.Wild crested geckos eat nectar as well as insects, and some people recommend fruit-flavored baby food for pet geckos. I do not! In recent years, powdered diets created especially for crested geckos have become available that, when mixed with water, make it easy for gecko keepers to provide their pets with the proper nutrition. Years of research have gone into formulating a properly balanced diet for the crested gecko and in no way does baby food come close to fitting the bill. The biggest misconception about this is that you can add a little of the good diet to the bad, and doing so will make it nutritious. A properly formulated diet contains a balance of all the required nutrients so that they can be absorbed optimally. Complete diets should not be added to or blended with anything else other than water. Doing so may greatly affect how your gecko absorbs the essential nutrients it needs to stay healthy.Although its coloration in the wild tends to be earth tones of brown, green and red, years of selective captive breeding have resulted in crested geckos now being available in an array of colors and patterns. It is this gecko’s polymorphic trait that has sparked the interest of so many. One of the most hardy and low-maintenance geckos available today, it can make a wonderful pet the entire family can enjoy. “Cresteds,” or “cresties,” as they are commonly called, are docile in nature and relatively calm and easy to handle as pets. The gecko gets its common name from the crests that run along both sides of its diamond-shaped head. Although it may look prickly, a crested gecko’s skin actually has a soft, suede feel to it. It has no eyelids, but a large scale called a brille protects each of its eyes.The ideal humidity range for a crested gecko enclosure is between 55 and 80 percent. A combination thermometer/hygrometer, often available at pet stores that sell reptile supplies, should be kept inside the enclosure to monitor temperature and humidity. Use a spray bottle to mist the enclosure with water; once in the morning and once in the evening will usually maintain a healthy humidity level while allowing a short dry-out period during the day, which helps to reduce bacteria overgrowth resulting from excessive moisture. Your crested geckos will look forward to the nightly spray down, and they will lap up water droplets from the plants and sides of the enclosure.
