Wisteria Black Dragon

‘Wisteria floribunda Black Dragon’ is a special variety of the well-known wisteria. It is a climbing plant with double dark purple-blue flower clusters that, like every wisteria, hang down in beautiful, long flower bunches. These flower clusters appear en masse in May-June. There may also be an after flowering in September. It is a fast-growing climber that can reach a maximum height of 10 metres. To keep the wisteria in the best possible shape, it is best to lead it along a pergola, fence or rack. Make sure there is a sturdy support, to which the branches are attached so that it can climb towards the sun. It is also important to prune the plant regularly during its growth or in early spring. Prune preferably twice a year. In early spring, when the plant is leafless, cut away all superfluous branches up to about three eyes. The eyes on the side branches will later produce flowers. In the summer, when the plant is growing vigorously, it is best to guide the long shoots in the direction you want. If you do not need them, it is best to remove them. If you keep your Wisteria compact and give it a sunny spot, it will bloom even more abundantly with wonderfully fragrant flower clusters in the spring. With good care, the wisteria can even live for hundreds of years. Older trunks take on a decorative, twisted shape. Be patient with this beautiful climbing plant, it can take a few years for the wisteria to flower properly.

It has long (36-50cm), densely packed, blue-mauve racemes and a glorious sweet scent. This lovely hybrid, raised by Audrey Menzies in Australia, is very floriferous, and not too vigorous. With moderately long (17-21cm), bluish-mauve racemes, it’s a good form for all types of training.Although wisteria is often seen trained along wires on a house or a wall, it can also be extremely effective grown up pergola supports or archways – especially in the case of wisterias with long racemes that are best admired without branches or foliage getting in the way – or as a standard wisteria tree up a post. But no matter how you train your wisteria, the importance of initial training can’t be stressed strongly enough:

What is the darkest purple wisteria?
Among the darkest purple Wisteria cultivars, award-winning Wisteria floribunda ‘Royal Purple’ (Japanese Wisteria) produces stunning tresses of sweetly scented, pea-like violet flowers, up to 20 in. long (50 cm).
Although the most common wisteria are blue-mauve there are also white, pink or purple forms, and while there are some forms of Wisteria floribunda that have only a slight scent, most are highly perfumed adding immensely to their desirability as a garden plant.

What is the most aggressive wisteria?
Chinese Wisteria/Japanese Wisteria Chinese Wisteria/Japanese Wisteria Destroys Native Wildlife Habitats. This vine grows very rapidly, reaching up to 70 feet with 15 inch trunks. Because of this rapid growth and dense shade, native canopy trees, understory trees, and shrubs can be smothered or killed beneath the heavy weight of this invasive vine.
Has a delicate colour, which many people love, and racemes that are 36-45cm long with around 76 to 86 very pale, mauve-pink flowers. Is moderately vigorous and has a some scent. Best not grown in full sun.

In Japan this is known as Nioi-fuji, which translates as fragrant wisteria, and it certainly lives up to that name. One of the least vigorous wisterias, with moderately long (25-38cm) racemes.

A moderately vigorous cultivar from New Zealand. Its racemes, though relatively short (12-18cm), are strongly scented and reddish violet. Leaves are bronze when young.

Which wisteria is best?
The best wisteria for walls is Wisteria sinensis. This is because it has shorter racemes (flower clusters) than other kinds. You’ll need to provide some support for your plant, using either wires or a strong trellis fixed to the wall for it to climb.
Wisteria climb by twining. Some species, such as Wisteria floribunda, twine in a clockwise direction, while others, such as Wisteria sinensis in an anti-clockwise direction. All have a compound pinnate leaf and the flowers, or more correctly inflorescences, are racemes, which vary in length and contain between 20 and 170 individual flowers, depending on species and cultivar. By far the most commonly seen species in the UK is the Chinese wisteria, Wisteria sinensis, which was introduced to cultivation in 1816 and rapidly became popular. The original plant introduced was named Wisteria sinensis ‘Prolific’, and it is still one of the best blue cultivars available, with a gorgeous scent.

When this vigorous climber is in full bloom, it is a glorious sight to behold. Nurseryman Chris Lane is your guide to how to grow, train and prune wisteria, and recommends his favourite varieties. Blooming in late spring or early summer, the flowers are followed by attractive, bean-like pods, which ripen in late summer and may persist into winter. Equally attractive is the dense foliage of fresh green, pinnate leaves which consist of 11 to 19 lance-shaped leaflets that turn to vibrant golden-yellow in the fall. Becoming a contributing member of Gardenia is easy and can be done in just a few minutes. The description of these plants has been written based on numerous outside resources. This is a high maintenance woody vine that will require regular care and upkeep, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season’s flowers. It is a good choice for attracting hummingbirds to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. Gardeners should be aware of the following characteristic(s) that may warrant special consideration; Black Dragon Wisteria is a multi-stemmed deciduous woody vine with a twining and trailing habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.A stunning vine when in flower, with handsome chains of white and lavender flowers cascading from the branches in spring, simply breathtaking in bloom; vigorous almost to a fault, can grow quite woody, needs ample support and lots of sun

Which Wisteria is most fragrant?
The most fragrant kinds of wisteria are floribunda, sinensis and brachybotrys, with these cultivars being especially prized for their perfume: Shiro Kapitan (sweet), Kuchi Beni (musky) and Murasaki Kapitan (sweet).
Black Dragon Wisteria is draped in stunning chains of fragrant white pea-like flowers with purple overtones and lavender falls hanging below the branches from early to mid spring. It has green deciduous foliage which emerges coppery-bronze in spring. The narrow pinnately compound leaves turn yellow in fall. This woody vine should only be grown in full sunlight. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America, and parts of it are known to be toxic to humans and animals, so care should be exercised in planting it around children and pets.

Black Dragon Wisteria will grow to be about 30 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 24 inches. As a climbing vine, it tends to be leggy near the base and should be underplanted with low-growing facer plants. It should be planted near a fence, trellis or other landscape structure where it can be trained to grow upwards on it, or allowed to trail off a retaining wall or slope. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) and it’s relative Japanese Wisteria (Wisteria foribunda) are landing squarely on the Most Hated Invasive Plants list.
What you need to do is cut off the vines close to the ground. They will, of course, resprout. Keep cutting back these sprouts until you have effectively starved the root system. An interesting fact I learned while researching this article is that Chinese Wisteria twists clockwise around objects in its path, while Japanese Wisteria twists counterclockwise. We and our partners use cookies to Store and/or access information on a device. I’d recommend cutting the sprouts back as soon as you notice them because they grow so fast, become quite thick, and are much harder to cut if you let them go.
