You probably know that wood comes in different types with each type possessing certain characteristics that make it ideal for a certain task. Before you establish whether the solid piece of wood is European beech lumber, oak, or pine, seek to know if it is real wood or some man-made composite in the first place. It can be quite difficult to identify real wood from artificial wood but, if you can see end grains that produce unique and natural lines, then it is probably real wood. Additionally, if you notice that the wood has a repeating grain pattern of a large panel, it could be veneer covering a plastic beneath it.
The other two important factors during the identification of wood are weight and thickness. Pick up the wood and get a feel of how heavy or light it is compared to other wood types. If you have a scale, it would be much better for you. Use the wood database to make comparisons hardwood lumber types and softwood types.
Mijatovic Ltd. wood supplier – is an international company specializing in wood supply, wood import and export and marketing of raw wood materials and wood products for industrial purposes for factories, carpentries, wood suppliers and more.By knowing how to choose wood for your needs, you can estimate the cost of your projects, determine if European oak lumber or European beech lumber suits you best, have an idea of how long the wood will last, so we could better understand what is the lifetime of the final product, and generally know what you are getting yourself into before making any purchase.
How many wood types are there?
We can begin to narrow down the 100,000 species by separating them into two main categories. Hardwoods and softwoods.
Broadly speaking, there are two types of wood – hardwood lumber and softwood lumber. The former comes from Angiosperms (broad-leaved trees) like walnut, European oak lumber, and maple while the latter come from gymnosperms (ever-green, conifer trees) such as spruce-fir, pine, juniper, cedar, and yew. Hardwood lumber is rare and hence expensive compared to softwood. It is also durable and needs very little maintenance.
Is there an app that can identify items?
Google Lens: identify objects and learn about them Google Lens image recognition software allows you to identify and learn about most things you come across in your daily life: buildings, gadgets, cars, articles of clothing, plants, animal breeds, jewelry, and even artwork. A notable exception is people.
Wood is an important building and design material. It is versatile, attractive, and so practical. With so many choices out there, homeowners must exercise caution before purchasing wood to avoid getting wrong materials for their needs. Use the tips above to help you get the appropriate product the next time you go shopping. The grain pattern is a sure way of identifying the wood type. In practice, hardwoods such as European oak lumber or mahogany have an open poor structure while softwoods are almost smooth with zero grain indentations. Another pattern worth observing is if the wood was plain sawn or quarter sawn at the time of cutting. Lacewood features large lace quarter sawn surfaces, Maple has a ‘butcher block’ appearance, and Oak, flecks. In this post, you will learn about the types of wood in the market and how to choose one from the other so that the next time a salesperson gives you Ash or European beech lumber, you’ll confidently know how to choose between them. Did you know laminate and veneer can’t be carved? If your wood has a carving on it, such as a bed frame with decorative vines or other patterns, it’s real wood.
Real wood has a distinctive and not altogether symmetrical grain pattern. If you notice the grain has small variances, that’s a good indication it is real. If it’s repetitive and similar all over the furniture, it’s likely fake. You can judge by the feel of the grain, too. When you touch real wood, it has texture. Fake wood, on the other hand, feels smooth.
Is the wood in your furniture real or fake? If you’ve wondered this before but never actually investigated, here’s a chance for you to find out. There are several differences between fake and real wood you can look for to determine what you have. Here are six tips to help you spot fake wood. One reason it’s important to distinguish between fake and real wood is because you need the right products to care for the material you have. If you have real wood, Furniture Clinic has Wood Cleaner and Wood Wax Care Kit to keep your real wood looking fresh. When you spend $25 or more on our products, you get free shipping. After you shop, check out our e-Learning Center for DIY tips.
Real wood furniture is much sturdier than fake wood. If your furniture stands up to repeated use and has been knocked around or otherwise abused with little consequence, it’s likely real wood. If it breaks easily or has warped or buckled, it’s probably fake.

The best suggestion I can give is learn, learn, learn. Learn all you can about the properties of wood. Buy books and read them. Do research on the Internet. Ask questions on forums. Buy different types of wood and use them for different projects. Choose the species you like, as long as they work for your application. And always remember, the correct choice of material could mean the difference between your next family heirloom or a pile of firewood!
One way to start is by choosing the right wood to match a certain project. Different types of wood have different characteristics. If you are building an outdoor deck, don’t choose Maple, Birch, or Canarywood as a building material. These species have very poor resistance to natural decay. Instead, choose something such as Ipe, Cumaru, or Cedar. For your next pool cue, don’t try to save money by using a 2″ x 2″ piece of spruce from Home Depot for the handle! That job requires a good piece of Hard maple, Jatoba, or laminated stock. If your project calls for bending wood, do not try Ebony, Mahogany, or Walnut. In this case you would be much better off using Oak, Teak, or Spruce. We can begin to narrow down the 100,000 species by separating them into two main categories. Hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods are broad-leaved trees that have enclosed nuts or seeds. Softwoods are coniferous, needle-bearing trees. Don’t get confused by the names. Hardwoods are not always hard and softwoods are not always soft. These different types of wood have a multitude of uses, and are often interchangeable in many projects. A completely different way to look at things is to choose a wood based on aesthetics. There are different types of wood to match everyone’s fancy. You can choose wood based on figure, color, grain, or texture. Figure can range from Birdseye and Curly to Quilted and Burl. If you happen to like different colors, everything you can imagine is available from white (Holly) to black (Ebony) and red (Bloodwood) to green (Lignum Vitae.) Do you like unique grain? Try on some Zebrawood, Rosewood, or even a nice Black Walnut crotch. As far as texture, some like it rough and some don’t. Leopardwood, Oak, and Wenge have large, open pores, whereas Ebony, Cocobolo, and Hard maple have a very fine texture, making the boards feel smooth to the touch. What does every woodworking project have in common? Wood! With so many different types of wood available, where does one begin? Unfortunately, there is no such thing as the “perfect” species for every application. However, mother nature did create enough variety to satisfy every project you could possibly imagine. There are over 100,000 species on the planet, so remember to choose wisely!

Xylorix PocketWood is a free-to-use app where users can access information and macroscopic images of over hundreds of wood species from around the world. With our WIDK-24X01 equipped on the phone, users can perform manual wood identification as well by matching the captured macroscopic images of their wood sample with the images available in our database.Hi there, thanks for the detailed review. We will continue to work on improving the app to better suits our users need. Also appreciate the good suggestion for adding bark and leaf images, at the moment the app focuses on providing info for identifying woods rather than the tree itself, but we’ll definitely look into that in the future. Have a nice day!

Identifying the proper species of wood BEFORE you start your project, is vital. It’s almost comical how many people will just grab any old scrap laying around and try to build from there. I love certain pieces and textures, a lot of the time it’s even the smell too.I’m guessing that just about every woodworker knows who Bruce Hoadley is. His books Identifying Wood and Understanding Wood are fantastic resources for furniture makers. He also was a Fine Woodworking contributing editor. And by all accounts, not a likely target for the anonymous hive mind of the internet. But it seems Hoadley has achieved a bit of fame as a meme. What’s a meme you ask? Typically, it’s an image (often with text superimposed over it) that goes viral. The website reddit is a hotbed of memes and I recently came across the picture above while browsing it. I find it humorous, but perhaps that’s because I’ve heard the same joke at least once or twice around the office. I know Taunton publishes the book (and I probably shouldn’t take any jabs at it), but that cover does invite “Yep, it’s wood.”
How can you tell if wood is real wood?

Bruce Hoadley and published in 1990. The earliest known variation of the meme was created by adding the caption “Yep, it’s wood.” to the image, likely to highlight the humor behind writing an entire book dedicated to identifying something so commonplace.
On May 22nd, 2007, a thread was posted on the community website FARK requesting photoshops of the book cover. The thread, receiving 36 replies prior to being archived, produced several examples of the meme (shown below).
Identifying Wood refers to the cover photograph of the book with the same name in which a middle-aged man is shown examining the texture of a wooden panel with a microscope. A prime example of an exploitable stock photograph, the image has spawned a series of photoshopped parodies featuring an individual carefully studying a commonplace and easily identifiable object and a caption based on the snowclone “yep, it’s (X).”*Record Scratch* *Freeze Frame* Yep, that’s me… About 11 years ago I was playing at Download Festival. Medium-Density Fibreboard is one among the most effective substitutes for plywood and other sorts of wood. MDF is made of wood fibres, generated from the off cuts of timber production and mixed with wax or resin, it is then heat pressed to a number of desired thicknesses. MDF is highly versatile due to the fact the pressing process eliminates any grains and knots, providing a smooth facing finish, ready to customise in a number of ways, including the ability to be custom cut to almost any size you could need. All of these types of wood possess unique and useful properties for an expansive range of projects, some more tailored to specifics, others can be multipurpose therefore giving you more choice and options for your project depending on what you need from your wood.
As well as this, its lack of durability can be put to good use in the film and theatre industry, as a wood that will quickly come apart and is easy to paint will be needed for sets and set changes.
On the other hand, Hardwoods are sourced from any trees which do not have needles or produce cones. These trees are most typically referred to as deciduous trees. It is true that some Hardwoods are extremely hard, which then comes with a degree of difficulty to work with, but again, this is not where the difference and benefit of one over the other lies. Hardwoods are better known for being more beneficial over Softwoods because of the many varieties of Hardwood that have very aesthetically pleasing wood grain patterns.
This popular and high-grade wood is an ideal choice for particularly structural work.
